They are mainly used for brush cutting, and bucking firewood, you don't have to bend so much using them.
I think they are a bit dangerous, but many on this site love them and use them regularly!
 
Basically they are used for piecing up logs for firewood (logs on ground or piled), they stem back to days of big heavy saws and some people swore by them, most people think they are just plain dangerous (me too), I am guessing they thought that making a huge nose (the loop) and covering the upper quadrant k/b zone, it would be more efficient and safer, but I am really not knowing and choose not to find out. There are however a couple of threads here on them and some excellent examples on Mike Acres' site of some oldies. :chainsaw: :chainsaw:
