Yesterday we dropped a silver leaf maple. It had been topped and was rotten from the top down. It had a bee hive in it and had some of the biggest conks I'v ever seen coming off the roots. after dropping it I was suprised there wasn't much rot in the base, but there was a large area of red stain in the wood. I'v seen blue in pines with bark beetles but never red. Is there a fungus that causes this? Just curious. Thanks.

It looks like future research is needed.

Sure makes a nice turning.
