I plan to build a gravel driveway through woods. I intend to remove
the minimum number of trees necessary to make space for the
roadway. Therefore trees left standing along it will be subject to
driveway construction within their canopy zone. I understand
there could be some risk to these trees from damage to roots
cut by excavation or suffocated by soil compaction. It turns
out that the local building authority requires a gravel-filled
trench 24 inches deep along one side of the driveway for
stormwater runoff management. This trench will fill with water
after major storms. How much does the presence of this trench
raise the risk of outright tree fatality compared to a gravel
driveway alone -- double? triple? 1.0005?

What makes you think the trench raises risk? It doesn't stay full for long.

Drainage is good for trees, generally.
