We live in a raised ranch. In the winter the finished down stairs does not get used - cold. Some how the wife got a idea (very well planted by ME) this spring to put in a wood stove in the lower living room. A trip to the Jotul dealer and an Oslo came home with us ($1700). A $1000 later for the pipe and the pockets were getting light. I came up with the idea of a raised bed and stone walls to added to the effect, old school. It looked really easy on Goggle. Following are step by step pictures of my build. All stone came from my farm and I have never did stone work before. The cost of the stone stuff was little under $300. Have a good laugh and please point out the good , bad, and ugly. The rest of the walls will be done in eastern white cedar T&G that I milled myself. Hope you are having a great holiday. I almost forgot, the chimney was hell to - old house.

NICE!

To avoid that the (pardon my poor terminology) concrete between your stones get dirty from ash spills i would recommend putting a steel plate (1cm) under your stove.

The brownish color will become grey at the front of the stove over time and that would be shame.

Polish it black with the Jotul maintenance stuff and you'll have the same color.

For the wife: much easier cleaning also
 
stove looks awesome, I just picked myself up the same one a few weeks ago, i ordered my ss liner and should have it going by the end of the week hopefully.
 
Thanks for sharing that build. I don't think I could engage in a project like that by just looking at a website or talking to persons that have done it. It looks fantastic. What was the total cost for the project?
 
Now that is really impressive! Having the stone from your property makes it even better. I bet that will be the most popular room in the house this winter. Thoes rocks will retain heat like crazy. Nice job!
 
How did you pipe it out the wall (inside and outside). While I have a stove upstairs, I was thinking about a small one downstairs also :clap: .
 
The pipe work was terrible. I wanted to go out side with it but the main wires to the house were in the way. I went up through Princess's room. I framed it in glued sheetrock to plywood and screwed in on. I then painted over some cedar I milled to match. I wanted to be able to get to the pipe if needed. The cost of the stone work was around $300 for 4' by 9'. The stones were free - well I just got the tax bill. This spring I will think about the pan.

Nicely done and great choice of stove! That Jotul is a really excellent stove and will heat more of your house that you thought. Heat rises and a basement stove is a good install.

It's sept now and traditionally time for me too start loading up the barn with the 7 cords outside seasoning since April. I've also got too install a second heater stove on the middle chimney (of three) in my old house. Fairly easy (relatively speaking) as there's already the "pie plate" covering the inlet too the chimney and I have a brick and slate "stage" (currently has my Bass and Amp on it) that the stove will sit on about 10" or one brick on end high. The toughest part will be the flex flue addition that I need too have too separate from the oil burner. :cheers:

Your work is amazing, very handy I can see. Thinking about the access later down the road is tops, kudos to you and your work !!!
