Use AS Search... . There are many threads detailing the changes from the early 90's to today.

To briefly answer your question... from 1998 mostly just plastic styling changes, and minor changes to the muffler, carb and cylinder to meet EPA. 1996 was the larger change to beefier crank / bearings, and polyflywheel.

I believe there also were changes to the crank/flywheel (plastic/vs metal) and ignition (red eye model).
