Hey guys, this is my first post here, been lurking for a while though. I read on here that Home Depot sold off their old rental saws for cheap so I decided to call and check. I wasn't expecting to find one really, but they had actually just got new ones in yesterday and were seling the old ones. I picked it up for 217 bucks. I think I got a good deal on it, but this is my first chainsaw and I am a total noob! LOL. I was going to get an Echo cs400, dolmar ps 421, or redmax gz4500. Hopefully I made the right choice going with a used pro saw over those brand new.

Do you guys think I made a good buy? I don't really need this much chainsaw, but at this price I thought I might as well. There is a dolmar dealer close by and I was wanting to take it to him to have it checked out, but when I called him the other day he like he didn't know dolmar and Makita were the same. What model of dolmar is the dcs 6401? Maybe that will help him. Also, where can I get a manual for it?

Oh, and here are some pics. :)

welcome to the dark side and we have cookies!!!

i love mine and looking for another to be a guinea pig:msp_scared:

it's a dolmar 6400

The 6400 seems to have a great rep. Most people here mod them into 7900s, but I hear they are great. The only downside is the weight... If you're going to get a new 6400. You may as well get the 7900. Same weight. MORE power.

Thanks for posting that in the thread manyhobby, I couldn't figure out how to do that. Hopefully it last me for many years. They said they put a new chain on it but I don't know what kind it is. The only markings are 3 little loop looking things on it. Doesn't seem to sharp really. What would be a good chain for it? I just cut 2 small pieces off a fallen log today when I brought it home and after the bar or chain didn't seem like it had any oil on it. Is that a concern, or should it not be noticeably oily? Like I said, total noob. LOL

the first part is admitting to it:jester:

look at the bar it will tell you everything you need to know about it
i bet your bar is a 3/8 72DL (drive links) .050
i run a 28" bar on mine all day

Silver Streak chain. Home Deepot puts a new one each time a saw goes out on rental.

I hear they are good for cutting warm butter...

Mine cut at least 2 (small) cookies! :D Then I replaced it with a proper chain.

Congrats on the saw OP!

Just put the bar over a piece of wood or anything you dont mind getting oil on and hit the throttle for a few seconds if the oiler is working right you will see a fine spray of oil the bar isnt always oily because the wood and saw dust soak it up.

217 for a refurb 6401 is a great deal.

Hold the nose of the bar about 1" away towards some cardboard or a peice of wood you just cut and rev the throttle you will see a mist of oil on it, if not then turn the oiler up (I believe these have an adjustable oiler, no?)

Like most others have said the chain on it will work but wont show the true potential of the saw. I would get a loop of stihl chain in the yellow variety then see how she cuts them cookies. enen try making a timed cut between the original chain and the new QUALITY chain nad see how much time a good chains take off of a cut.

Great score! It's a 6400 in blue jeans! you will be more than happy with it! And yes i'd say it was a great buy! Run it, run it and run it some more!!! :msp_thumbsup:

Score! That saw looks like new. My better half has been eying up one of those post modification with the 7900 top end- I hear it's a reasonably priced modification for what you get...
Little concerned about your Dolmar dealer, though- be must be a noob too- to not know the affiliation?

The best chain is a sharp chain.

Great saw. You must be living right. Every time I go to HD to check on the sale for their rental Makitas they either have none ready to sell , or just sold the last one. Yours looks like it's not been abused at all.

:what:

You'd be amazed at what some dealers don't know.

Thanks guys, I'm feeling real good about my purchase right now! A guy at work told me to get a yellow chain too, thats a full chisel right? About the dealer thing, thats why I didn't stress not going band new. No matter what I buy whether its a car, atv, trimmer or anything I seem to know more about it that him. Thats what I get for being a forum nerd and over researching everything. LOL. I b couldn't believe they had one either! They had just got new ones in the day before I called! :) I printed out the manual last night and read that about the chain and some pretty good info on felling and bucking. When you adjust the oiler it says to turn it to the left, is that with the bar on the bottom, or on top when you flip it over? I'm ready to get cutting, rain needs to go away!

Nothing wrong with researching before you buy something. When you turn the saw over turn the screw to the left the way you're looking at it but usually in the middle is plenty good enough unless you're running a longer bar.

Turn the oiler all the way to the left( small white inlaid plastic screw) bottom of saw. Then get yourself a semi chisel or chisel chain. You better get the semi-chisel cuz you sound like you're learning. No sweat! We ALL had to learn. Most the hard way. Good Luck. and Welcome! All my saws turn to the right but the Makita is backwards including the on off switch. I've flooded it getting used to this.! But what a saw!!
