I already have a Husky 357XP that I am very pleased with, but I'm already wanting somthing bigger. My father in law and I will have the chance to take a few big Oaks that are dead for firewood this year. Some of them will be as big as 48"-60". I've always liked Husky, but won't limit myself.

372XP. Snag one now before they really are gone forever!

Enough grunt for the Big stuff, Light enough for the usual stuff, and your 357 will be perfect for a Limbing partner.;)

My vote for what it's worth.

Best of luck to ya!!

A Dolmar 5100s (since they apparently aren't going to offer a Makita equivalent)

Or

Maybe a 4000 Poulan if the right one comes along.............

I was thinking of the 372, but didn't know if that would be a big enough step up. My dealer has them for around $750, and the 385 for around $850

If ya look at the weight difference and power gained between the 372 and the 385, it favors the 372 unless you do LOTS of big tree felling and bucking.

The jump from the 357 to the 372 is immense once you get the saw into wood, and you will find yourself running the 372 for everything but limbing and smaller rounds, because it is so much faster and the weight difference isn't noticed much.

It might just be me, but the 385 is a smidge porky for a GP saw unless most of your cutting is on 30" plus trees or you are thinking of dabbling into Milling a bit.

The Stihl 460 is in the same place, and a darn good saw in it's own right.
It just sings a different song while working.;)

See if ya can't get some hands on before buying.

Best of luck to ya!

I'd have to say go with a 372.If you really want to step up get a 395 or a 660 stihl..One of the problems with the 395 is this...Weight and it's awkwardly balanced(to me anyway).A 395 will pound you into puddy on a long hot summer day.I love the 395,it's probably one of my top 3 favorites but I only break mine out when I really need the extra boost in power.A 372 will happily pull a 32 inch bar with skip chain and it's a pleasure to run.It doesn't wear you out near as fast and believe me it's a huge step up from your 357

Since you're open to suggestions,

Dolmar PS7900. About the same weight as a 372XP, with the power of a 385 / 390 XP class saw.

I had both and got rid of the 372XP. It couldn't get close to the performance of the PS7900, so it never got used. Will handle big wood no issue.

The best part, at least around here, the PS7900 is about $125 less than the 372XP, leaving $ left overfor long bars and chains.

If you're staying Husky go uo to the 385 / 390 class saw for that size wood.

My opinion, remember what you paid for it.

Take Care

+3:agree2:I have a small gap in my line up I could fill with a 2171 lol. It was very hard for me to pic the 7900 over the 2171. You know I think we have the making of one of those stupid reality T.V Shows here what saw should I pick?

The 7900 is a lot more saw for the money compared to the 372... at the same weight and less money.

I'd also consider a larger used saw, something 90+cc if it's just to take care of those rare large trees and not going to be used all that much.

Everyone seems to like the Dolmar 7900. The specs say it has over 6 HP:greenchainsaw:. One of my main issues with anything is durability. I want something that can be worked hard when I need it, and with proper maintenance, last a long time. Will the Dolmar keep up with Husky and Sthil in long term use???

Good post - if wood that large is more or less a "one-off" opportunity the 7900 sounds like a logic companion for the 357xp.

Personally I most likely had gone with the 390xp, but then I have a 372xp....

I also like the idea of a used older saw, if it is a "one-off".

Did some price checking at my dealers and the Dolmar 7900 with a 28" bar is within a few bucks of the Husky 385.

Keep an eye on the tradin post...probably can find a well cared for 70cc + saw for much less than new.
If your lookin new many of the good ones have been mentioned...I'd go w/ the best dealer. Don't rule out Solo, Shindaiwa in the 70 cc and up class, if you have a good local dealer.
