Went climbing this weekend at one of my favorite places, Sam's Throne in Newton County, Arkansas. Took the 200T along for camp firewood, as the 009 is undergoing some repairs. Well, it seems there was a bit of an ice storm a while back. The destruction was enormous; pics that follow don't begin to tell the story.

The Arkansas Climbers' Coalition, unbeknownst to me, had a crag cleanup to clear the trails that same day. SO, guess what I did. It was cool to combine two of my favorite things to do at such a great place. We even got interviewed by some reporters.

This is another picture-intensive thread. I tried to reduce the file size so dial-up folks could see it before next year. Enjoy.

So, with Craftsmans, Homies, Macs, Wild Thingies, and a Stihl, we set out to clear some seriously blocked trails. First, we had to get there.... (and back out, there is a bit of a bluff to contend with.

Did you know that Newton county is one of the poorest in Arkansas? Nothing out there but trees and rocks.

arkansas

some friends of ours were in ne arkansas this weekend and said the damage was so bad where they were they wonder if they will be able to recover any time soon.

I like the high-tech tool pouch...
Does Baileys sell those? :hmm3grin2orange:

Awesome thread Jon! Its a great feeling to use toys from an obsession to do good work. Reminds me of Chapman, but that is a lot more work what you are doing!

God Bless... Jason

Yes they do, and just for you, they have authorized me to dispense discount to certain deserving individuals................ ((can you smell the BS yet?) hhahahaahahahahahhahhahahahahahhahahhaahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHHA

Wow, that was some tough terrain and storm damage!

The Craftsman bears a striking resemblance to "Ugly Betty" down in my garage. It was a $15 yardsale purchase, and gets used for rough work. That "Wildthing" probably shares a shortblock that would interchange with the Craftsman. Its too bad that Poulan chose to plate the piston rather than the cylinder. Its all about "building for a price".

Now to the matter at hand.....

This is what we originally came for.............it was a beautiful day Sunday!

Our destination: Sam's Throne.

To do this: Route is a 5.7 called "White Rhino."

I will try to put up a new route. Overhanging 5.10+ I think I will call "The Hills Have Eyes...."

I climbed it on top rope, it is soooo covered with lichens it is currently almost unclimbable by normal mortals....Will be really cool when it is clean.

Some more pics....

Here is some perspective.....

I think that was the Kinks...

Wait, was it the Troggs?

Beautiful photo's, much better than the dreary mist I've been seeing out the window all day today.

You are right about a confluence of obsessions though. Best I can do is sometimes combine a visit to some fellow AS addict as I travel about.

You are correct. The Troggs. Mea culpa on that one... Thanks!

newton county

awesome pics,teach.

last poster was quite correct SE Arkansas holds the title for poorest and least populated.

Lots of tourism - don't forget the Buffalo National River;the park service got a head count of 1,000,000+ last year.

Newton is also the last bastion of REAL logging in NW Arkansas-very wild and wooly
