Not bad work for a STRANGE young man...

Time is something you never get back. You actually did something productive, even if only you got your feet wet in the business (any business). A lot of younger folk don't work hard or learn a practical skill until after school (high school or college) and they don't know what the workplace is all about. Since you are getting exposed to the career path even before enrolling at VT, you are that much ahead in "the game." You may even learn that you don't like what you thought would be enjoyable, but even with that, you're still ahead of the rest of them. Good on you!

Thats so true. People I know dont even know what hard work is. They hardley know what they want to do with their life.

When i go to college i will already have learned alot and have real word experiences.

i must be crazy too :dizzy: you sound just like me. very few of us at 17 today that want to work in the forstry industry. when i tell people how much i make from just selling firewood on the side they are stunded.
best of luck for you and your intrest in forestry and chainsaws:cheers:

You are the only other 17 year old I know that wants to do that.

Thank you, and good luck to you as well!!

A friend that I went to school w/ got in a pissing match with a teacher jsut before graduation...The teacher told him he would never make anything of himself but a ditch digger...Wouldn't you know it he owns one of the most sucessful excavating companys in the area...I would truly guess his net worth is 10+ times the teachers...He is just a good old boy that is not afraid to WORK...And from what I have seen or read neither are you...

Ditch digger! LOLOL I like it!

no prefectly normal sooner or later you will be looking at a 660

So, I am a senior in high school and plan to go to Virgina Tech after a year of community college. There I plan on getting a degree in industrial forestry opperations.

Today I came back to school after a week of spring break and everyone asked me what i did. I proceeded to tell them I modded my chain saw, cut a few trees down, sharpened some chains, and bidded on a tree removal/climbing job.

They just look at me and laugh. Untill I tell them how much i priced out the climbing job. haha

There is NO one my age that is even remotely intrested in this kind of stuff.
Am I crazy??:dizzy:

Don't know if I'm really qualified to be giving advice, but my perspective is as follows. Concentrate on what you need to do and don't give a #### what other people think. The country's going to hell in a handbasket, proof enough that there's alot of dip####s out there, and a good indicator of how you'll end up if you mindlessly follow them...

its ok.
im in college as a senior mechancical engineer, and im completelely addicted too...i have printed out 3 entire textbooks on two stroke engines to read in my spare time...(and i hate reading). everyone calls me crazy, but i have more practical experience than most people in my major here.ex: when it comes to engine or machining, i literally get phone calls from other students doing research, wanting me to help out

FJ and Bropwnpot, you guys are way ahead of the game! I spent many years as a teacher, principal and then school superintendent, and I saw a lot of students come and go in that time. The most important quality for a young person in this world is the will to work and the willingness to learn. Obviously you two are already far ahead of the pack in having those traits.

Bottom line: with such great work ethics you will be successful in life, no matter what you do. And you will be healthy, well-adjusted people as well. THAT is the key to success in life, not the amount of money and toys you might pile up. Go for it and get it done! We are proud of you!

I work with a lot of mechanical engineers who don't know the difference between a screwdriver and a pipewrench. They know the theory from books and school but have no praticle experience.

You will be way ahead of your competition in life in industrial forestry operations as you will have real life experience of how it's done, not just the book theory. (Book theory is important too)

Good luck!

i agree, i used to work for company a genereal contracter. pretty big company.

company started hireing these college grads that had great resumnes as job supers i was also a super. i watched them go through quite few of these college grads, the college guys have no exsperince in the feild and were costing our company lots of money.

ill also say that since quiting the construction company and going into the exscavation buisness with my father money has gotten tighter and i now have to worry if were going to make it through these tough times. before when i worked for someone else money was alittle better and steady through good and bad times. right now i feel its much better to be employed by someone else

weve been barely scrapn by with the skin on our backs since november and there isnt much to look forward to.
also logging truck around here are getn scarce you see them pulling over the rd reefers and parked everywhere for sale.

these are very tough times.

stay in school and when finished go to work for someone else for 5 years or so.

Yes.

They just look at me and laugh.

And that there is a problem with public high school. For a high school student you are very very strange. You are seem to be mature and forward thinking. You'll never fit in with that attitude.

However, that attitude should give you a lot of success in the "real world" once you get out of high school. When you go to your 20 year reunion and find out that 1/4 of your class thought high school was the best time of their life you'll be thankful you were strange back then. :)
