Is it worth it? 044/046 fixer upper

I stopped in my local pawn shop today, and they have a very rough looking 044 or 046 on the floor... for $195. The plastic looks awful (and is missing the model badge), the clutch cover is broken in a couple places, and the handle/tank will probably need to be replaced. It does have a 3/4 wrap, and a usable 32" ES bar. They do guarantee that their power equipment runs, they allow returns until the next day if it doesn't run.

I've been wanting to get a bigger saw, and the price is right on this one, but will I wind up sinking more into it than buying a cleaner, newer MS460?

i think id pass. maybe wieght for one in the 100-150 range that trahsed.

this one cost me 25 bucks, it need top end though. i got another none running 044 to get this one going.

i searched long and hard to find this saw. i would try every and all shops that had stihl signs up. ive found the servise shops that have very little inventory are the ones with project saws.

the shop where i got this one had only a few saws for sale and piles of saws vbeing serviced.

this saw cost me, 25, bar chain about 80, carb 28, ummmmm 10 bucks for the airfilter cover. and the donor saw was givin to me that had the good top end.

i know deals like this dont happen everyday but i think 200 is alittle steep for trashed saw

I was kind of thinking the same... it seems like a killer deal at first, but even without needing a top end I'd probably be looking at $200+ in hard parts to make it decent, plus whatever little stuff (carb kit, hoses, etc.) it needs to run, and that could easily add up to as much as a clean one.

Yah, some of the 'deals' out there are not deals. I have gotten some good ones, like an 044 and a near new 361, but passed on a lot of other 'gems'. Some saws out there are just beaten to death. So much to replace, or so poorly redone, no point in buying them. Also the great saw deals of this winter seem to have all dried up and gone away now.

I got the saws that I wanted and needed the most though. And I sold off the duds, old stuff, parts saws and junkers. And that dang new Poulan WildThing. Took me 2 months to off that thing on CL.

Looks like that 044 could use a DP muffler cover. I bought a good running 044 just like your's there. 3/4 wrap and dual doggies, and a gusher oiler. Got it from a logger that took care of it. Good gas and good oil, and he kept it tuned to burple at WOT (tad rich). It only needed a few parts and peices, and it runs like a raped ape. Runs great retuned with the 046 DP muffler cover.

ill mod this one through the factory port.

im not found of dual ports in the muffler. theres 50% gain to had right through the factory port, if not more.

Yah, but it was like $25 and all I had to do is bolt it on. 5 minutes, tops.

25 bucks is almost a piston for the other 044, im very tight with stuff i can fab in the garage. member the 084 dawg i fabbed.

I personally run factory port ported and a dual port cover on my 044.

I would also pass on the beat up 044 for $200. I paid $200 for a mint 044 with scored piston last year and I thought it was little steep. It was worth every penny though.

Pass on it. No where near worth 200. If you are willing to pay that, you can get a better saw, maybe not pristine or anything, and maybe needing a few parts to make it "nice," but lots better than that one. Be patient and hold off, keep the two bills set aside and keep looking. You will be that much happier that you did when the good saw comes your way.
