I bought a Stihl MS270 with an 18" bar brand new from a dealer this week and after a full day of cutting i have 2 problems. The first is that the saw burns when i starts cutting thicker wood, or do alot of cutting fast, is there a way to adjust the oil on this saw, i couldn't find anything after days of google and manual searching. The second is I think the 18" bar is too long, it chugs through thicker wood, it will slow right down, is this a bar issue or am I cutting wrong?

Also any advice is welcome as I am new to cutting in general, I have been working with my Uncle who has been using saws since before i was born and he is teaching me to fell trees, and clean them up.

sounds like dull cutters on one side or a bent bar.

is the oiler hole on the bar clogged? maybe it got some crap when you changed chains.

smoke comes out of the kerf when i'm cutting, i made sure it was sharp before i went cutting, and sharpened it after.

Welcome to the site , there's lot's of info here so be prepared to do alot of reading .
I have an ms280 and have used an ms270 and had no complaints but 16" on the 280 and 15" on the 270 .
You should check your chain (or get a spare) because mine would smoke after I cut fence wire , spikes , car parts and rocks  .

is the oil in the saw being used up when you refill it do you notice ?how long hve you been sharpening chains?

the oil doesn't completely empty when i run the tank dry, its hard to say how much doesn't get used. As for sharpening chains my Uncle always had me give him a hand so I've had lots of practice.

The chain isn't to tight, it rolls around the bar with the proper clearance.

Bar isn't bent, we checked that first.

I generally try to keep logs under 14", we have bigger saws for the bigger stuff. is there a way to crank the oiler up on the new saws?

i dont know on that one look in your owners manuel if not look for a screw on the bottem of saw for the oil pump should be an arrow more or less like i said i dont know that saw but someone will see this and tell you exactly. thall would know that answer for you look for him on the blog and shoot him a pm

I forgot to mention, i cut mostly softwood. I cut hardwood branches off, we generally work as a team, my Uncle fells the trees, i clean them up, my brother mans the log skidder and takes the logs away.

softwood should be no problem is the chain flinging oil when you rev it and look for oil flying when saw is out of the cut?

Check your bar slot- If it's opened up, the chain will flop to the side when cutting and generate lots of friction, and a bad cut.

meez sayz

take to the dealer and have them help you. sounds like it might need a dealers help.
have you cleaned the bar and the oiler hole yet:confused:

yes it is, but like i said, it doesn't use up the whole tank.

And normally it doesn't. I have a couple of 270's in the shop.. they are close to the 260 (but a bit heavier -- about same power (on Stihl site it actually shows slightly more power than 260) -- although the 260 is not a powerhouse). When the gas is out, the oil will be almost out.. but not quite.. maybe 90% used.. at least that is how ours are set up.. and work well. Have never had any issues with the 270's at all.. great saw for the $. The oil adjustment screw is on bottom of saw.

It is a great saw, thanks for telling me where the oil adjustment screw is.

neither does mine. uses about 80-90%. i have a 20" bar on mine w/Oregon chisel chain. this little saw is impressive. it goes thru 16-18" black oak like butter. on softwood, w/an 18" chain, your saw should fly. you've got something wrong somewhere. a good dealer should have filled oil & gas, adjusted rpm and chain oiler, and trial cut in wood....
