Ok,so i have a practiccally new Stihl Ms390 and this thing is a beast. But is would be even more so if it had more than just a muffler mod. What i am getting at here,is i've heard good things about "Woods Ports" now i know some what about them, but Could you guys educate me a bit more?and also point me in the dirrection of who can do them?and for what cost?

Thanks,

A typical woods port will run you around $250. If you're wanting a ported saw, I'd recommend you sell the MS390 and purchase a pro built saw. The 390 has a home owner clamshell engine. If it were me, I'd not want to invest that kind of money in one. A pro built saw will have a verticlly split crankcase and a serperately bolted on cylinder. Also, I won't port clamshell engines. They're harder to work on and harder to port. Also, squish cannot be adjusted. If you keep the 390, I'd say do a muffler mod, trim the limiter caps, and retune it. The 390 responds well to a MM and runs quite well.

Try TreeSlingr'...he does good work. Mild to wild...you pick.

whoa bro

the only things needed on a 390 is the muffler opened about 30% and the carb fattened up a wee bit. also if you put a 24" bar semi or full skip non safety chain and go cut wood. my bil has a 390 the saw had the stock 20" bar and comp safety chain it flat sucked. i secretly play a a trick on him and put a spare 24" bar and full skip chain,he almost needed new undies:jawdrop: he aint used a saw much. he finally just gave up and i do all the tree falling he was just using a krapy chain so he had a bad attitude towards tree cutting, lucky me iget more play time:greenchainsaw:

I agree. Do a muffler mod open up the gas and cut. There are many threads on the muff mod. I have a 310 which is basicly the same saw with a smaller piston and cylinder. It really came to life when I modded the muffler. I would never consider porting it, due to the clamshell design. Its a dependable saw and a good loaner as is.

Can I borrow it?...

HA HA what is wrong with a clammy. I'll never tell but ask the gang around here that it's made fell bad about my 0293144 Sthil it's smokes alot of nonbelievers. I win a lot of bets with it. Not many will run saw for saw against it.

how about a little exhaust/intake work?

can these benefit from a bit of widening of the I/O ports?

I realize you can't reach the transfers easily....

TIA!

Is it really that big of a differance? If your charging hundreds of dollars to port them, which is crazy, then who cares if its a clamshell? There all 2 strokes.

cost versuss gain

clam shell saw are a beach to work on and time is money when doing custom work. a clam shell wont take the wild amount of porting a pro design saw will. the clam shell bearings and crank shaft just do not have the ability to take port work. porting will increase the stress level on the crank of a saw, pro sawz are design to take the abuse. if a person has the time time and tools is say go for it:clap: me my sawz are to valuable to be doing wild things like porting, i depend on my sawz to make a living so down time is big $$$$$$$$$$$.

So no none pro saws can handle a woods port?

Sh@t I just ported a clamshell saw, I'll let you know how it holds up.

they can sorta

the clam shells will not last as long ported as would pro grade saw:confused: a clam shell saw ported and use with a cautious owner may last along time . if person just wanted a clam shell saw modified i would only do the muffler. they way clam shells are made makes modding hard because the jug can not be lowered do to the jug being part of the crankcase:dizzy:

Now I'm learning something, thanks!

Yes, it can be done. I ported my little MS180. It's just not worth it to me as a modder to deal with the added frustrations. First of all, it's a lot harder to just get the cylinder off. The entire saw basically has to come apart. Then, the ports are much harder to get too. The ports are much farther down in the barrel, since the top half of the crankcase is added to the length. From the buyers stand point, I just don't think it's a wise investment to put good money into anything less than a pro saw.

if i owned a clamshell saw it probly wouldnt get ported for the above reason. we do have 310 in the company, i have opend the muffler up removed the limiters on the carb and thats likely as far as ill take it.

id recomend a used husky 359 to start your build
