New to me 046 mag

So A while back I rebuilt a o64 with a 066 top end.. The friend that gave me that saw still had a 046 that I wanted but did not push him for it.Any way he gave it to me on Saturday and I started taking it apart on Sun..

Now after cleaning..

Turns out the flywheel bearing is shot so I pick up new bearings and seals Friday at the dealer...

I am sure it will clean up nicely, I am currently working on building one up from several parts donor saws.

I will be doing this a little at a time due to Xmass coming and all.... But it feels great having a job this time and a little bit of a budget...When I did the 064 I was broke...

Anyway I will be splitting the case this weekend and installing seals and bearings... Then the following week I hope to get the starter rewind rebuilt. It is missing all but the spring o and the cup needs to be replaced as well..

Lots of screws missing and I need to decide on what brand of rings I want to use...The Cabers in the 64 seem to be working great...

I also need to find a clutch cover but that will be no problem..I evan can take one off a spare saw for now....

Southbound; great score. Great job on the cleanup. Keep us posted on your progress, I learn alot from rebuild threads. I've had good luck repairing stuff like your handle with J B Weld, etc. If the break is in a high stress area, make sure the part is extremely clean, "V" it out slightly like you would for a weld, then apply a thin layer of the JB. Then cut some straight lengths of spring wire (piano wire) and embed them in the weld across the break. Add at least one more layer of JB. The wire acts like rebar in concrete to add strength. Wish I had friends that would give me saws....

I like to use fiberglass cloth and JB weld to fix a break like that. Sometimes a couple layers.

The clenaup is looking good. Is that not some scoring on the piston? Even if not, it still looks very worn. I bet the rings are too. I'd be seriously considering a new Meteor piston. They're not that expensive and it'd be money well spent.

Looks like it's coming along really well. I've got an 064 that I need to get busy on. I think I have a good cylinder, but need new piston, rings, seals and bearings. I would have blown all the crud away from the cylinder base before removing the jug, but if you already were planning to replace the bearings then it doesn't matter.

I can see small divets on the the top of the exhaust side. Must have sucked some fines in 'er.

New rings for sure...The marks you see on the piston are more color then scoring...

Got the case split...

This bearing was missing some balls..

And this one is locked up...

Not sure about the crank yet...

I picked up the bearings and seals and new case gasket today.....

Ok so the crank spun on the on the clutch side bearing.. I can slide on the bearing on but there seems to be no play after that... So after reading this I was hoping someone could elaborate on the dimpling process???

Use a sharp center punch to dimple the surface. I'd use some red loctite or something similar, too. Depending on the fit, you might need a catalyst to encourage the loctite to set up.

Locktite 660 Is what seems to be recommended....

As for the dimpling I should have been more specific How many dimples?? Should I keep adding until it gets tight?? Or should I add a few more after that??

Time for a update...

I had trouble with the split bearing so I took it to the shop where they helped me remove it...Once that was done time for the oven.....I heat mine at 170 for one hour.. I also put the bearing in the deep freeze for the same amount of time...The dimpling was a lot easier then I thought it would be.. After very few it tightened right up.. I also went with red loctite as it was what I had and I could not wait...

I also had the rewind starter rebuilt today..

Now as I sat here sanding on this head I thought lets see what the bay had to offer??? I found this... So I thought I would give it a try... I think it was a good price.....

So should I use Stihl ring or Caber?????
