recently acquired a stihl 009, orange and white. just got the oiler fixed. when i fired it up it would start and idle but when revved up it dies after about 3 - 5 seconds. the fuel is fresh. i'm gonna get a new filter but figured i'd also rebuild the carb since this saw has seen some serious abuse and neglect.
i noticed this carb only has adjustments for the L mixture and not for the H. what's up with that? how do you tune for high rpm's? noticed on fleabay that some carbs available have adjustments for both H and L. will that carb bolt right on?
also, not sure what type of carb this is. the users manual doesn't say. i haven't pulled the carb yet but wondered if more than one type of carb (manufacturer) was used on these saws?

An old reference of mine indicates a Walbro WA-99B on the 09 and a WA-56D for an 09AV. Not sure of the compatibility between saws, but I just got an 010AV with what I assume will be the WA-56D (since it was also listed in the same reference as the carb for the 010AV) and it has both L and H adjustments for what that may be worth. I'm assuming the 99B is the single adjustment version?

Not sure this helps much.

every little bit helps. thanks.

You may also want to pull the flywheel and dbl chk the ignition setup for good points gap/condition, etc. Going thru that now with this little 010 and hoping for an IPL and manual from the wishlist later.

Cool little saws, huh? I was kinda surprised when I pulled the 010 apart yesterday. Simple, effective, almost elegant for its' time....and it even still ran (sorta) before I started takin' her down and cleanin' her up.

Good luck with your 009.

Just received a SM and IPL for these little rascals. There were several carbs -- all of which have H&L adjustments along with idle screw. May wanna take a close look at what ya really have there.

Be interested to hear what ya find. 'Course a picture is worth a thousand words...

final update.
replaced vent and fuel lines - vent line was brittle, fuel line was excessively soft inside the tank. figure it could easily have been closing up with the applied suction.

kitted the carb - it was really trashy inside, the filter in the fuel pump was missing. kind of thought there would be a new jet in the carb kit, but not. just had to liberally dose with carb cleaner. (yes, it only has the L adjuster screw. go figure)

took the muffler off and apart - not too bad on the inside, nothing blocked. cleaned it up, reassembled, remounted.

sharpened the chain which has literally run out of cutter on one side.

fired that little puppy up and voila it runs like a screaming ape. didn't even bog down in an 18" round.

yeah, i know, i shudda done one thing at a time but ain't got the time to reassemble and break the saw down more than once. now all i need is a decent chain.

lesson learned
i cleaned the carb out in my usc. used a citrus based cleaner at full strength which worked great. unfortunately i figured it could use an overnight soaking (if you're like me; if you can't see its clean you don't believe its clean). the next day my nice shiny carb was a dull gray. i tried cleaning with carb cleaner. i then proceeded to use gasoline (gulp) in my usc (located outside in case of sudden combustion) to try to get it shiny again; ran it for about 20 3-minute cyles. still not shiny. as i said it does work well though. don't soak your carb overnight in a citrus based cleaner unless you like gray carbs.

thanks for all the comments and advice.
