I have searced but can't find the differences between the Dolmar 5100 and 5105. So far I have CAT muffler and better cooling. All I can find around here are the 5100's and at $379.99+tax and no one has the 5105 so can't even get a price on those. What saw do I want? Does anyone ship to me? Thanks

The limiter in the coil is 500 rpm lower in most 5105's than in the 5100's

If you're going with the 5100S you should either have a good dealer nearby who knows what they're doing or you should be fairly capable at tuning a saw yourself.
The 5105 on the other hand is a bit more forgiving. It doesn't tend to run as hot, except for that cat muffler. Get that cleaned out or swapped as soon as you can.
The 5105 also runs 13800 rpm compared to the 5100S at 14500 rpm.

That $379 seems like a really good price for that saw. If you're comfortable with the dealer, then don't hesitate.

What makes it run cooler? I did hear that some 5100 had CATs too? Should I offer less cause it's an old model:rolleyes2:

The PS-5105 Runs cooler because of redesigned airflow, and in the newer versions with the EasyStart its set to run a bit slower at 13800 rpm.

The PS-5100S never had the CAT muffler AFAIK. You can always offer less and see where it goes. Why not? At least you might get an extra chain or case...

The later 5105's have a different crank from earlier models. The late US versions of the 5100s had cat mufflers.

Hi
I also want to buy a 5105, but since i will order it from an online shop, I doubt they will be able to tell me what version (and so on...) it is.
What I want to know is how can I find out if it is the new version with the Easy-Start and max RPM at 13,800?(I guess it will specify in the instructions manual, but if not?)\
And if it's not the newer version, should I regret buying it? How much better is the new one, or how bad is the old version?
I'm from Europe, but I think they started introducing cat mufflers here to. how can I tell if so? Although i really like the price and power of it, i am a little concerned about what I read so far about it: getting hot really fast, being so sensitive about the carb settings- and me being a beginner I'm not sure if it's the best choice for me.
Any suggestions? - in the same price range i can buy an MS 211 or a Husky 435

Hi,
I also want to buy a 5105, but the best priced one is on an online shop, so I don’t expect them to know if it’s the latest version or not and so on.
Is there a big difference between the older and later versions, how much better is the new one, or how much worse is the older one?
I really like the power and the price of the 5105, but I’m a little bit worried about what I read so far about it: getting really hot and having a sensible carb, so considering the fact that I’m an occasional user I’m not sure it’s the best choice for me.
The question is: has the 5105 a pretentious engine, carburetor? and a service setup before first time usage and fresh, quality gasoline should save me from regretting the buy?
For the same money I could buy an MS211 or a Husqvarna 435, which obviously are a lot smaller (2.3/2.2 against 3.8) .
So, is the maintenance difficult on this saw? Will it cause more problems than a Stihl or Husq?
Any suggestion?

All the issues that Dolmar was having were with the 5100S, not the 5105 which was tuned down somewhat and also redesigned for better airflow, all to prevent the overheating issue.

Buy whichever saw you like, but the MS211 and 435 are not even close to a 5105... period. You're comparing a couple of Fiats to a Porsche.

I have a 5105 Easy Start. it was made in 2010.

Other than adjusting the needles and installing a 5100 muffler, I've never done anything to it.

like I said before, having a 3/8 X 20 bar makes the 5105 a little different than my NE 346XP - 325 X 18 but I consider one of these saws as good as the other.

The Easy Start on my 5105 does not make it easy to pull in the way of drop starting it for example. It has no compression release and to just jerk on the handle, it pulls over pretty hard.

But the 5105 Easy Start will kick off if you can get the engine past top dead center. When I bought it at the dealer, he sat in a chair and with the saw in his lap, pulled on the handle with enough pressure for the piston to eventually go past top dead center. Within the usual number of pulls, it fired. He pushed the choke off and on the third pull it was running.

I'm not about to start a chainsaw in my lap. I just put it on the ground with my foot on the handle and start the thing. But my 346XP is easier to pull without using the compression release.

If I tried to start my Dolmar 111i by pulling it through compression slowly, it would snatch the handle through my fingers when it back fired. So something is different about the magneto in the 5105?

Here is Brad's daughter starting a Dolmar 420 Easy Start. This demonstrates the proper way to utilize the Dolmar Easy Start system.

...... .

I have been told by a reliable source that the issues continued, at least with the first version of the 5105 - but I believe that was before the max rpm was lowered.....

How can i find out what version of 5105 I'm about to buy? I want to buy it from an online shop, so what should I ask the person I'm talking to on the phone to look for in order to establish what version it is?
Also, i don't know if this is the case anywhere else than in Europe, but the model is called dolmar PS5105D, does the "D" mean that it has a cat muffler?

There are too little info on the Dolmar websites right now, to find out what the "C" and "D" suffixes are about. If I had to guess, I would guess that the "D" is about a deco valve though, and a "C" about a cat.

Just a guess though....:msp_confused:
