Value of an 076?

I just found a local 076 up for sale that caught my eye. Looks to be in near perfect cosmetic condition, with a new Stihl 36" bar and chain. The saw supposedly starts and runs perfectly, and is ready to run.

I have looked around on eBay, and haven't been able to pinpoint a true value for this saw. I found one that has ~1 day left on the auction at $450, and it looked pretty beat up. The seller said his bottom dollar price is $500 cash. I really wouldn't mind picking up a spare big saw to save us in the event our 066 fails (like this past job). Also figured it would be a fun toy to play with. Been reading up on the threads here about the saw, and have been trying to soak up every bit of knowledge I can.

What do you guys think? Does that price sound fair? What should I look at (specifically) before buying the saw? The seller said the saw has never been rebuilt, and has been very lightly used since he bought it (just as a toy). I imagine that it might need tuned up, but what else should I look for?

$500 is a very good price if in the condition advertised..!!

Check compression..want to see 150 or better..certainly over 140..!!

Pull muffler and view piston for ANY scoring..!!!!!!!

You might be better served with another 660. I had a 076 super and was thoroughly disappointed in it's performance, and that was after the Stihl dealer looked it over and said it was running as it should. My stock dual port 066 was faster, way faster with a 36" bars buried in maple, and all of my over 100cc saws would walk all over it bad. The 075/076 series weigh about 22lbs for the powerhead alone and for that kind of weight I want real performance not a cool looking boat anchor. I'd go with a 084 or 088, a Homelite 750, or a Mac 125, or even a 090. I traded my 076 super in on a Stihl fs250 weed trimmer and gave him $200 too boot, and mine looked nice. I think I got the better deal. I've read about other people who were selling or had sold theirs for the same reason, ask RandyMac about his experience. Just trying to save you time and money,they'll go for about $450-$700 for the supers.

Too heavy to be considered a felling saw. I have seen it done but only once after that one tree it sat in back of the truck and watched lighter saws do the work. It is however a very cool saw for taking pics or a video and would be a fun GTG saw like this.

in reality most of the work was done with a ms441 and a ms260.

Well, I did wind up picking it up. I figured more than anything it will be a fun toy to play with. The saw has absolutely flawless paint, and a new 36" Stihl bar/chain. It fires off first/second pull every time, and everything works. Nothing is loose or sloppy at all. It looks like it has either been completely redone, or has honestly not done much cutting at all (if any). I got it for $500 out the door. Will post up a few pics here when I get a free minute.

OK, you guys talked me into it... Even though I am dead tired, I am too excited to not play with it some. I had to bump up the idle a tiny bit, but it purrs like a kitten now. This thing is a torque monster... I don't know if our 066 is weak, or if this is just a good running 076 but it seems far above and beyond more powerful than the 066. I can't wait to bury it into some hard wood and play!

I have a pretty good camcorder, so will try to get a video or two of us playing with it some up in the next few days.

I found the 075 to have dismal performance, like most of the stihls of that time, it was over-weight, over-priced, under-powered and parts were horridly expensive. Even though the 050/51s were of a similar size, they were the better saw.

That's a chore on that saw. The muffler is bolted next to the carb. You have to pull half the saw apart to get to the muffler and look down it. I would do a compression test for sure. Under 140lbs you might need new rings.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I have a chance to buy a decent looking 076. It a bit of a drive but does porting wake them up much?

I would say probably not . I am sure this has been brought up before and the gains weren't that much if I remember right. Those horizontal drive engines don't offer much when it comes to porting. A 76 cylinder is an odd animal to do any type of porting.
