Ok so I have been readin up on cuttin up a muffler for my 044 but i have a question. It has a fairly large exhaust hole in it already(roughly .720"). Seems to me that goin by the 80% rule, that i'm already at full size. My 440 on the other hand has a SMALL exhaust hole in it and maybe that would be the better choice for a mod or dual port. Any thoughts?

THANKS!!!

Not quite sure what yer askin' Brother...Does the 044 with the enlarged muffler port run well? It should, that's exactly what we do with our 044s and 440s...we didn't bother with the dual port muffler route, just enlarged the heck outta the stock port (and kept the spark screen intact). After tuning these saws all RIPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry Bounty Hunter
I enjoy readin, writin' not so much!
I guess what i was tryin to say was the 044 muffler had a hole in it already the size it should be. By my math anyway! (math is always up for debate!) Heres what I figured. exhaust port 1.125" X .750"= .84" x .8(80%)=.672" hole, does any of that seem right?! If it is, does the mod need done? or do i just do it to my 440 which i know is choked off!
Is that better?

Open it up some more. You running with the spark screen in?

I did remove the screen when i had it apart and re-tuned the carb for now. So u think its to small still? oakie doakie! Bigger it is! I would kinda like to build some kick butt lookin one when i have some time. i saw some NEAT:msp_love: ones on here!

I've heard people claim from 80% up to 125%. I don't know which is right, but my 660 runs very VERY well with the stock outlet opened to around 1" and a DP cover. I'd open it up to around 1". I'd to the 440 while I was at it. ;)

Well that sounds like a good plan! whats the worst that could happen! Have to buy a new muffler OR a new saw!
BUMMER!Been thinkin bout a 660! I know the 440 is way to restricted so im sure i will do something with it eventually. Ive been messin with the 044 because i run it everyday and probably have a better feel for it and was purchased with a running log splitter and a top handle Mac for $200.

What if a guy built a mini header tube(exspansion tube)inside the muffler?

If you go to 100% and then run with the screen it seems just right, at least on my 4X 044`s.
The spark screens do cause some restriction, how much is debateable, just depends on their condition and age. They can plug up some if the mix is too strong or the carb set too rich.

I would leave the stock port and put the screen back in and put a second port from a Husky 288.Here's a pic of the one I did. It's simple and cheap and you have a daul port.Pics not to good.

sure, makes sense.
if u take each wire and lay them side by side next to each other, thats the amount of blockage they would have. lot more than a guy would think!

Yep... I got a stump broke 372 with two ports that are each huge... Ear protection is suggested...

I know there was a thread on this somewhere but where do you get those?

I agree that the screens do indeed restrict the exhaust flow. I don't know exactly how much but I would guess at least 20%. I have a 372xp that I ported the muffler to about 100% with the screen out and I could tell that it just was not enough of back pressure, put the screen in and it runs great.

You can see for yourself just how much a piece of screen does block air flow taking a piece of window screen and while holding it in one hand hold your other hand about 6 inches in front of your mouth and blow on your hand while moving the screen between your mouth and hand, you will notice a large difference in the amount of air blowing on your hand.

Mine ain't very friendly... He's kinda grumpy and mean... But I'm wearing him down...:msp_wink:

I pity you members that have to deal with less than satisfactory dealers, I have a great relationship with the ones I deal with. It never hurts to take a treat and a coffee or the like with you once in a while when you pay them a visit....
