I just picked up a rough HT 131 for $20 bucks Turned over freely so i said what the hell, Couldnt say no at that price. My question is....

Do we have like a top 10 things to do when you pick up dead saws.
Is there anything specific to the HT 131 that go wrong. I heard they have had a problem with coils.
i put in some pics justView attachment 242962View attachment 242963View attachment 242964View attachment 242965 you can see what im working with

Here is my to do list so far
Clean degrease etc
new fuel filter
clean air filter
new lines to the carb
fresh mix
cross fingers and pull

The first things to do a pull the muffler and look at the piston, rings, and cylinder.

Next do a compression check with a known good compression tester.

If you find problems in these analysis tests..no need to start replacing fuel lines and filters..!!

There's probably a good reason the owner would sell for $20..??

If it was mine I would first check out the tube assembly to make sure it did not need any work. If that is good then move onto the engine. First aspect of the engine I would check would be the valves. Adjust them and inspect to make sure the cam is working correctly. Then move to the fuel system. The engine is cheap to repair, the drive tube assembly and gear box is not.

The seller told me that if you extended to 17 ft you will disengage the shaft. Pretty much dont go full extension. Ill keep at 16 ft to be safe. He said it ran when it was last stored

That is most often caused by a bad bearing block in the tube. You should be able to go to the stop at full extension without a problem. Those extending poles are a little more complicated than they look on the outside.

I'd check the valves first. You'll need a special feeler gauge to do it, or cut a regular one. Make sure you have the crank positioned where the decomp is not holding one of them open, or you'll end up doing ALOT of tail-chasing. Remember that it will not make any impulse to pump fuel with the valve cover off, so you need to adjust and put it back before trying to fire it up.

$20 for a 131 is a screaming deal if it is not stolen.

That's a great deal, it looks like it was left out side a lot. If it were me Id clean it all up first, then I d check the the Comp and have a look at teh piston, after that Id prob throw a re build kit at the carb check all the lines, replace plug fuel and air filter and throw fresh mix and start pulling. You could put new plastics on it and have a nice looking and working saw when your done, I have faith that it'll run.

P.S check the valves the 4 Mixs require inspection of them at times. Tight valves will cause it not to fire also.

The shaft extension problem is a snap ring on the lower shaft that has slipped. You may be able to cut a new groove for it, but more likely will have to replace the shaft section.
Pressure test the carburetor and test the check valves on both high and low speed jets. If either are stuck, it am be cheaper to buy a new carb than mess with the old one.
You cannot see the piston from the intake or exhaust port (overhead valve 4 stroke design), but test compression using a 10mm thread adapter on your compression tester.
Have fun with the 4-mix engine.....

Update june 27 tear down

So I started with a clean up and tear down
The gunk on this machine was a 1/2 inch in some spots
Started to take the cover off and I noticed the carb was loose. I thought i would tighten
her up turns out the intake is cracked.
Next i noticed the throttle cable is badly worn its down to 1 wire
Also I noticed a a non ngk plug. I prefer ngk in my machines.

i posted some pics below View attachment 243210View attachment 243211View attachment 243212View attachment 243213

I know I go a little overboard at times, but my Stihl 009 that went though a flood and is 14 years old still looks pretty new, I know these are tools and are meant to do a job but a little tlc goes a long way it keeping them in good working order and also makes it a lot easier to work on. Not sure how you can spend close to $700.00 on a saw and then just destroy it, I know the saw prob made the money back for the guy but still.

Id clean it up real good, replace the intake maybe throw a rebuild kit on teh carb since you have it apart, throw all new filters and a plug on it also along with the throttle cable. SInce you have it tore down id check the valves also, I have down it myself but thee are steps on teh internet on how to do it and I hear it is pretty easy.
