How many tanks of mix to break in engine 100%

I've got a newer J'red 2153. Only 3 tanks of gas so far. Getting stronger with each on though.

I wanna do a showdown between her and my ms261. (She's gone through about 100 tanks)

How many tanks should I put through her before she's about 100%.. 5 or 10 or more???

I am trying to make the competition as fair as possible.

About 20-25..IMHO..!! - But likely not much less than that..!!

And don't run a saw completely out of gas...not a good thing..!!
Likely why most modern saws have visible fuel levels...you're running 'lean'..!!

No I don't run out of gas. Every little while I just refill fuel and bar oil. 3 is just approx. Tomorrow she'll be running all day.

I richened her up as much as possible til I figure how to trim these darn carb limiters.

The Jonsered should be almost broken in and the MS261 will need atleast 5 more gallons of
fuel through to be broken in.

The J'red has only 3-4 tanks. It is getting stronger each tank. I was gonna do as sunfish suggested and get 25 tanks through the

2153.


The MS 261 has at least 100-125 tanks. Do you think that's not broken in yet?

Seriously, this 346 of mine was horrible at first, I was ready to get rid of it! But each tank it got noticeably stronger. 11 seemed to be the magic number, now it's a keeper!

Yes sir. My 2153 got quite a bit stronger after only 3-4 tanks. But this first tank was sloooooow.

If I had to bet I think it will be a little faster than my 261 once it's broken in. It'll be close though. I aslo think I do like the outboard

clutch. It stays amazingly clean, cleans chips out great.

Stumpy ran mine on the first tank and he just shook his head. It was not good!
My old one was twice as fast in the cut, after 3-4 tanks they were almost even, after 10, the new one was faster. Then I ported the old one. :D

Your 261 is broken-in. I'd run at least 20 tanks through the Jred, then do a shoot out.

I much prefer the outboard clutch!!! :msp_biggrin:
 
Are you guys serious? That many tanks of gas? I've only got about 4 tanks through my 346 and I felt it was very strong already. Certainly much stronger than the first tank. Guess I've never run a strong saw. I can not wait until I get that many tanks through her, as it seems to get stronger with each tank. I'll get a chance to run it in some oak this weekend. You've really got me excited now.

I was amazed with my 346 the first time I ran it. I did mod the muffler before ever using it though. On top of that, it was frozen wood that I broke it in on too. I wonder if it's manufacturing differences in piston/cylinder clearance?

It very likely could be a difference from one saw to the next.

I was very amazed first time I ran my old one 12 years ago. Not so with the new one?

But like I said, the newer one is now a keeper! :msp_smile:
 
What's to break in on a chrome/nikasil bore saw?

Both of my old Jreds came from the vendor and went to work on day one. Didn't notice any difference in performance when they were new and don't see any diffence now. They're almost 30 years old and still cutting like the day I bought them. However, day one was a long time ago and the saws have probably aged better than I.

I've run every saw I've ever owned WOT from day one..aint ever noticed any performance changes over time,,huh, who'd of thought,,,

There's no "need" to break in a new saw engine, but they will loosen up and spin freer...and the rings will seal up tighter.
 
If ya don't notice a saw getting stronger after it's first tank, you're just not paying attention, or it was so long ago ya don't remember. :D
