I talked to a fellow on Saturday, that knows a fellow, that owns a prototype diesel chainsaw that was imported from Europe. He couldn't remember details like who the manufacturer was or what country it was made in, but he says it was lightweight and had push-button electric start.

As neat as it would be, diesel prices are high. Performance would need to be spectacular for me to purchase one.

Sounds like a home made job for sure. Although if someone could make a mini detroit 2 stroke diesel chainsaw.:msp_ohmy: That would be SICK!!!!

Well, the per gallon price is higher, but you get some decent mileage from the engines and no worry about the cylinder walls being lubed. Also torque, very high compression engines. Also fuel longevity, it doesn't go "bad" real quick. Also, running diesel, you wouldn't be buying mix oil, so that drops the price per gallon for saw fuel.

Did a little CL roadtrip yesterday with my ratsun diesel truck, around 90 miles round trip at around 2.5-3 gallons ...

Can't see a diesel two stroke passing USA emissions though, without some serious tech innovation hoop jumping.

Would like to see a modern version of a diesel saw though, just for kicks.

It would be slick if you could follow up and get that guy to register here and put up a thread on it.

A quick google search for "diesel chainsaw" indicates that Echo has been testing one in Canada...according to another forum.

Interesting. I had no idea diesel had lubricating properties to that extent...

Around here diesel runs about 40 cents higher per gallon than regular 87 gas (I read somewere that is how Texas indirectly taxes the trucking industry, but I don't know if that is true). I would need some very strong persuading to purchase a non-industrial vehicle, or a chainsaw, that runs on diesel.

As others have posted, some additional info about & pix of a modern diesel chainsaw would be good.

Was there an old diesel powered chainsaw that required an actual fire to start??? My memory is foggy :dizzy:.

And all the saw manufacturers (that I am aware of) recommend 89 *or higher* octane to run their saws on. Not 87. So if you run premium, it is almost a wash at cost per gallon (I run premium no ethanol, 93 octane, yes, it cost a lot more than the cheapest E10 you can find around here...I don't care either). And some guys run avgas, at lots more per gallon.

Plus diesel would not need mix oil added to the cost.

right now, I get diesel at around 3.75 (that is road diesel, farm diesel would be cheaper), versus gallon of premium gasoline (again, no ethanol, they charge higher but I can get it locally so I use it) at 4 bucks and mix oil, call it around 75 cent a gallon, so $3.75 versus $4.75 cost per gallon to run in this theoretical new diesel saw. Diesel would win on cost per tank in other words.

Just sayin'.....

Dodge Ram 1500 with a 3.0L VM Motori and now the possibility of a diesel chainsaw?? And we wait….

Diesel is high but so is driving way out of your way to get ethanol free gas and HP oil. Diesels have torque but there slower. I would think a gearbox would be needed to speed the chain up or it would have a nasty chain for low speed. Sounds heavy and bs to me.
