Started to notice these Caterpillars around ? what are they eating ? How destructive are they ?

If the client is OK with it, I usually just leave pests alone this late in the year as it doesn't really matter if the tree loses its leaves. The only reason to control is to prevent future generations.

Thanks for the info. We have not seen a ton of these unlike the infestation of Cankerworms we saw this last spring. They said it was the worst infestation we had in a generation. Really thinking of banding our trees to keep these worms out.

If you do decide to chemically remediate know they have the kickass survival ability to drop from the leaf when they are hit with spray. Be sure to spray the mulch ring under the tree.

Just remember, it's not that late in the season down south, I'm planting the fall garden this weekend.

Coffee grounds spread around the base of trees (used seems to work fine) keeps canker worms from getting in trees if applied before they hatch. I spread the grounds in early spring and again in early summer. Restaurants save grounds for me.

appreciate the tip. Sounds like a non lethal manner to deal with the canker worms without killing everything else in the yard.
I am really thinking about banding some trees but not sure exactly how the banding works. The banding also looks unsightly on the trees.

Had those worms on a pin oak out in the yard. They would completely strip the leaves off the tree every august. That tree was about 25 foot tall back then........
