I just had the air filter off and I think it's a Tillitson carb, but not sure the model #. But, I could be wrong.

Where would the boost ports be located?

Across from the exhaust. Do a Google image search for 655 boost port and you'll find pics that show the difference.

So I dumped a little gas in the carb and pulled on the rope a few times and she fired right up! It only runs until it burns that little bit of gas, but it seems to run good! Just not sure exactly what that means? Fuel filter? Line clogged? Carb problem? Thanks for all the advice!

The Poulan is a 245 SA, not sure what that means? The clutch cover is broken and the top handle bar is bent. I haven't tried to start it, but I might mess with it in the next few days.

After setting a long time the carburetor diaphragm is most likely hardened up and a carb. kit, fuel lines and filter should have it cranking. Nice saw and great power.

Sometimes you can just keep dumping fuel and bump starting it and it will eventually pull fuel and prime itself. If that doesn't work, sometimes just sitting with a little fuel in the carb will soften the diaphragms in a day or so (I have also soften diaphragms by soaking in brake fluid). Otherwise, clean and rebuild the carb, install a new fuel line amd impulse (if fitted) and fuel filter.

I pulled the air filter and the intake(?) and this is what I found.image.jpg
I don't know why I thought it was a Tillotson? Looks like a Walbro SDC? Not sure why it says McCulloch on it??

The line from the tank to the carb is fine, no blockage, but fuel isn't getting into the carb. I guess I'll get a rebuild kit and see if that fixes the problem.

It's actually pretty soft and it was holding pressure. When I pulled it off the carb, fuel sprayed everywhere! But it sounds like a good idea to swap it out anyways.

It's got a Mac SDC for some reason. You need a K-10 SDC kit, some 1/8 x 1/4 tygon and a new filter. Easiest saw ever to change fuel lines. There's a bulkhead fitting in the left front of the air box. Fish the filter out of the tank, cut it off, take out the bulkhead fitting and replace the two lines. 10 minutes max.

Wally carb works better than the tilly HS on these saws anyway.

If you think you have an air leak, check the reed block and the block to case gasket. They have a habit of cracking the block and leaking at that gasket.

My boss got the saw from an old logger buddy of his dad's, so they probably just used what they had laying around the shop. They also punched a big a** hole through the muffler cover, I guess to get a little more exhaust flow. It does have some baffles over it, but it's loud enough that I have to wear earplugs when it's running.

What's the difference between the Mac and Pioneer SDC carbs?

Probably no difference. Mac and Homelite and maybe more stamped their name on some carbs. The kits are the same no matter.

I don't know why anyone. Would punch a hole like that in a Pioneer muffler. They're certainly not choked up.

One other thing I'm wondering about is adding another dog on the outside of the bar. It looks like I'd need an entirely different clutch cover?

Man, I can't wait to try this thing out!:chainsaw::chainsaw::chainsaw:

You need a different cover for the outside dog, yes. They're great old saws, lots of fun to run.

I poured some gas in the Poulan 245's carb and it fired right up. So I put a little in the tank, primed the carb, and the damn thing runs fine! If I let it idle for a few seconds, it wants to stumble a little when I give it the gas, but once it revs up, it's okay. At least someone drained the fuel out of it before they put it in storage.

One thing I don't like, is that it vibrates like crazy and I wouldn't want to run it all day long! My hands would go numb!

And, upon further inspection, the case is cracked. It seems a tree fell on it, bent the crap out of the handle, and cracked the case where the handle screws on. And broke the clutch cover. Somebody JB Welded the case/tank so they could still use the saw!
