I mostly cut dead Red Oak, but I had this one nice White Oak that was standing dead for about 5-6 years. I cut it down, and started processing it. While I was stacking some I had split the day before I came across these unfortunate Red bugs. I'm not sure they had anything to do with the death, they might have invaded after the tree died. But, these couple did not survive my cold weather splitting:

Super location. I'll make 2 guesses. (1) You never have to cut a live, healthy tree for firewood and (2)I have recently seen that big dead one in the yard.

(1) Right, and (2) Right!

Only "live" trees that ever get the saw, are storm damaged down, or beyond hope. Unfortunately, we've had a few of those kind of storms in the past couple years. Spent two weeks cleaning up after the October Snow of a couple years ago, then Hurricane Sandy, which wasn't really even a tropical storm till it got this far inland, but still wreaked havoc on the trees, and then last year when a big, un-named ice storm took out a row of 60 year old pines that formed a property line.

Mother Nature also "selects" my firewood. It is frequently not the easiest or best wood but I think of it as a win win situation. I get firewood and the opportunity to be a steward of the forest.
