went to use my ms170 today at mom and dads to do about 20 seconds of branch trimming,, i havnt used it in about 6 months and it still had about 1/4 tank of mix in it,,, so i fired it up and throttled down on it and the little sob died,, fired it up and it fell on its face,,,, got my brad snelling screw driver out and gave the low side a 1/4 turn richer,,,,, run it for about 20 seconds after it got warmed up good but it was smoking like a freight train,,, even at idle it was blowing a lot of smoke and ran like crap :angry::angry::angry:,, got home and decided what the heck,, i drained the tank out and put in some fresh non ethonol free mix in,,, it had non ethonol mix in it,, ok did a drain and refill fired it up and run it for about 5 minutes to make sure the old fuel was out,,,,, well result was the saw run fantastic like it should,, did have to lean high and low side out just a tad,,,, smoking was very limited and run like a charm,,, moral to this story,,, drain old fuel mix out and refill with fresh

Story of my life around here with all the saws and machines I have. I hope you are feeling a little better buddy.

I like smoking saws keeps bugs away

I dump my fuel back into gas can everytime im done running the saw. i got a big funnle with a screen filter to make sure no crap goes in can.

I don't like leaving anything empty. Good cause for moisture and things can still dry up and get hard. Imo. But if fuel is in them it's a good reason to fire them up make some noise and know they still run

11 below!!! Yikes, do you get "used to it"???

4 degress above F', no wind and sunny, maybe go skiing or sledding, any colder--thats one reason I cut wood!!!!

I recently started my old MS361. It has been mothballed since 2012. Did not bother to dump out the old mix. Six pulls and it was running just like it always had. No problems. Mix was 93 octane 10% ETOH (GASP!!) with stilh ultra. People worry way too much about mixed fuel.

The big thing I see is that the gas evaporates and leaves it very heavy on oil and makes for a lean air/fuel.

Worked on a Husqy the other day, he must have put about 12 "glugs" of oil too much or something. It was so bad I had to pull the muffler off abs drain the oil out.

Just a thought on condensation
If you left a 5 gallon gan of gas 1/2 full out side and it gets cold and water condenses on the walls of the can then it warms up and it melts this goes on of and on for years .Does the can fill up with water.
If the glaciers are melting wheres all the water going
Kash

from my understanding ( don,t believe me as far as you could throw me) it is actually very difficult to get condensation inside a properly sealed gas can. even if it is half full there is VERY little water in the air inside the tank. basically not enough to actually condensate. the outside of the tank may do it but the inside is different. It also depends on the material of the can and how fast it can adjust to the atmospheric temps. the slower it takes to keep up with the rising temps the worse it is.

this is all circumstantial though.

HE HATE'S THESE CANS!!!!

If the glaciers are melting wheres all the water going...

It isn't going anywhere. It stays right here on the planet. It's a closed system, my friend. It's either in the ocean, the air, or underground or bound up with other molecules. It doesn't hop on a UFO with Bigfoot and Elvis and go for a ride to Pluto. When the glaciers melt, the oceans rise.

How long will a saw sit with all the gas drained, like some say to do. I always thought the gaskets would dry and not do their job like new ones. I am from the old school that fills his up before storing.

The amount of water droplets (humidity) in the air inside the can is a fixed amount, depending on the humidity and temperature of the air when it was introduced to the can. We are assuming a can that is closed tightly. For condensation to form, the temperature has to drop to below the dew point. A given volume of warm air can hold more water than the same volume of cold air, because the air molecules are further apart. When the temperature reaches the dew point, the colder air can't hold all of the water that it was holding while it was warm, and some of it is released. The excess water eventually sinks to the bottom of the gasoline, because its specific gravity is greater than that of the volatile gasoline. Now, it's pretty much trapped there. If you don't mix it back up or shake the can, and you open the cap on a hot, humid day... you'll introduce more air/water and if the temperature drops below the dew point, again, the cycle will be repeated. That's the only way the accumulated water can rise. If you spent all of your time doing this, you would get quite a bit of water building up, but the air volume is slowly decreasing. So, it would take longer and longer to get any more water building up. With a half full 5 gallon can, you probably wouldn't live long enough to get very much water built up.

If you accidentally shook the gas can, and took the cap off on a hot, dry day all of your hard work would evaporate off. If the gas can is not sealed up, and it goes through a lot of the heating up and cooling down cycles, the amount of water would increase more rapidly. That's a good reason to not leave the can vented to the open air during the winter.
