Hey guys/gals first off wanted to say I really enjoy this site and there's a lot of helpful stuff on here. Ok, I just picked up a Mcculloch pro mac 10 10 chainsaw from the 70s from a lady whos dad owned the saw and passed away. One owner saw in great condition cosmetically and mechanically it appears. Got the saw home and dumped the old fuel and bar oil, filled both with fresh. The saw fired right up and ran, cut well when upright. I started to fell a decent sized tree today and when I started to make my notch with the saw on its side, it started loosing power, running rough smoking and bogging. Turned saw back upright and cut a few logs on the ground and cut fine. Then put saw back on its side to try and finish felling the tree and same isssue, bogging smoking etc. Now I can't get the saw to run well upright, won't accelerate at all now and dies upon pulling the trigger. Not sure if the fuel line, filter is original to the saw and I haven't checked the screen arrestor yet. Any advice would be appreciated, I really like the saw and there's just something about old all metal tough saws that brings an appeal to me. Hope I can use the Ol girl for many years to come. Thanks

That's a nice old-school saw. I bought one in '77, the first saw I owned.

Seems like the on-its-side position might be immaterial since it then quit running right in any position. I'd suspect the fuel filter first. Take a length of baling wire or some such and shape a hook at the end of it--use the hook to fish the filter out of the fuel tank. Then it's the usual suspects: check condition of fuel line, and clean the carb. The paint is hardly worn off the bar, so not enough use to clog the muffler screen.

Threre's a good chance the filter rotted off the hose, or the filter rotted off the filter holder. A chainsaw fuel filter holder is made heavy intentionally so it can swing side to side inside tank and stay on the bottom, when the saw is turned on its side. (like for a felling cut). It probably ran well at first till the filter or carb got plugged with old gas varnish/dirt. A new filter, lines and a clean carb will probably make it run good again.. BTDT.

Hey thanks for the response! I got the saw running good now, I replaced the fuel line, filter, and cleaned-readjusted the carb and cuts great upright and sideways! very cool and helpful site, really enjoy it! do you have any Mcculloch saws?

No. I have mostly vintage Homelite saws. The principles are still the same when troubleshooting on most models.

just a thought. might want to check the seals and make sure there not getting hard. saws is in awesome shape.

I've got a Mac 555, which was a '77-78 model almost identical to the 10-10. Haven't run it in ages, but will not part with it. It looks and feels a twin to the first saw I ran.

Wow that's cool man, what saws do you run now regularly?
My main users are Huskies, a 346 and 372. I have a 371 and 272 as backups for the 372, and another 346 that I recently rebuilt as a backup. I also use a Stihl 200t for climbing and sometimes for trimming limbs headed for the chipper. Got a Dolmar 7900, beast of a saw with a 24" bar, but sadly we don't have that many trees hereabout that require it.

100 saws! I showed my wife that and her eyes got as big as saucers, and I said see I'm not that bad. haha I bet you have some nice saws in that collection! The 372 seems to be a very popular saw, haven't had the opportunity to run on yet but I hear they're nice and one of the best firewood saas made!

I have a chance to buy a 10-10 for $100 or obo. Says saw is in great running shape. Is it worth it if all is good on saw? Has original case and all. Any advice would be appreciated.
