Has anyone turned a bench grinder into a bar grinder? I have an extra bench grinder that someone gave me and was thinking of trying. If you'vd done it, what did you do for the table? How well does it work? Pictures?

Sorry...But I don't know...
What do you have to grind on a bar? Burrs? I just use a file...

For trueing the bar rails

I have a much larger machine. I also have two stones that look like they would fit a grinder like this. I would consider a trade for special tools or who knows what.

A disk sander works very well for truing up the rails. I have used a 10" sanding disk in my table saw with great success, but I got tired of having to clean out all the sawdust to true up a bar. I ended up buying one from Baileys similar to the unit pictured above; it works well enough but it does seem to go through the wheels pretty quickly.

Using an 8" bench grinder with the table/work support lined up so that the center of the bar hits the wheel at the outermost radius will work fine. Finicky setup, low cost.

I don't go threw any huge amount of bars, so I use all kinds of things to clean up bars....files, 4-inch angle grinder, Dremel, sky is the limit....

Bench grinder would work great, just have to take it slow as it could take off more than you want if not careful...

A former neighbor used his benchtop grinder with the stone dressed at 45 degrees for lawnmower blades and bars . I still use my coarse, medium, and fine harbor freight diamonds for chainsaw bars.

Why not pick up a cheap used table saw and make it a dedicated bar grinder?
