I've got a bunch of trees to prune high up. When I was 10 years younger climbing 30 feet up was easier. Now I'm looking at getting minimal climbing gear. I've got some pretty good rope but one thing that I'm aggravated with is the price of locking carabiners. Every place seems so be charging $15@ or more and very few places sell in quantity.

On Amazon they've got several sellers that seem reasonable but then they always put in the ad "not for climbing".

I've looked at WesSpur, REI, Campmor, even WalMart.

Walmart seems to have the best price for what I'm sure is a cheap chinese thing "iClover [3 Pack] Locking Climbing Carabiners Ultra Tech 30KN Aluminum Screwgate Carabiner Screw Lock D-ring".

But is there any place I can buy like Black Diamond cheaper by the 6 pack?

Why on earth would you want cheap, when it comes to life support? Don't be Cheap, be Smart! Even Minimalists need quality gear! If nothing else, place a WTB in TreeBay. I'm sure you'll find what you want from the fellowship here!

Like I asked:"is there any place I can buy like Black Diamond cheaper by the 6 pack?"
I considered the BD a quality item but it seems all the places I looked at sold them by the ones or twos.

My 4 pines are less that 50' tall, and all I wanted to do was thin the limbs out myself. Home Depot sells Silky tools, and of course Amazon has a few items that I got to keep me from falling out of the trees. Good D rings are costly.
This saddle at amazon did a good job for me.

$15 is pretty cheap for a carabiner... Check out treestuff.com Its one of the best places to buy arb gear IMO.
I've not looked at there stuff yet. Here is the one i like from wesspur for about $19.
wes spur 19 bucks 4 in x 2.75 in.gif
... and I'm looking to try one of these out. About $17 for this micro pulley.
Micro Pully 17 bucks for half in rope.gif

If you ever do place an order through treestuff, make sure to type in the discount code "ARBORIST" on the checkout screen. Knocks a percentage off your order. The Climbing Technology carabiners they sell are pretty cheap and pretty solid too. $15-$18 bucks a piece depending on style.

Thanks Bmezz: I was in Harbor Freight yesterday to get a tool bag on sale. I like them for splitting , and felling wedges , saw files, and stuff. Anyway, this guy comes in the store looking for an item they were out of, so he hands me a 20% coupon which saved my a few more bucks.

Does that have an ANSI or CE rating card sewn into it somewhere?

It looks like a loose copy of a Petzl.

This YXGOOD saddle for $60 does not have a ANSI or CE rating tag. That said it is a very good saddle for occasional use. Instructions are poor, but a few times harnessing yourself up will familiarize you with it. Find it at Amazon.

I'm sorry, but $60 buys you a certified rock climbing harness at REI. I value my life more than risking it on some unknown copycat over saving a couple hundred bucks.

If that thing drops you from 30', how much will it cost you? Only has to fail once. I'd clip into a 5.11 trainers belt (not the $11 copycat on Amazon - they're crap! ;) ) when using it. Gravity is unforgiving.

Just my opinion. I was a helicopter tech so I take gravity very seriously. :) Stay safe!

The CMC Rescue boxes of rope are hands down the best deal going. My longest 1/2" was 142' and my longest in the "misc" box was 250' of 7/16" Static Pro.

I didn't fare as well, my heaviest in the 1/2" box was 11.1 pounds of CMC Lifeline. So I bought a "misc" box, and it was all 1/2" (checked with a micrometer), virtually a dupe of my first buy. Nothing thicker, nothing thinner.

However to add to this thread Campsaver has Mad Rock Ultra-Tech HMS Screw Gate Carabiner on sale for a final price of $6@ plus shipping. I've now got a dozen locking carabiners.
I found the carbiners mentioned favorably on another forum I can't mention here.

11lbs is still over 135'. That's a nice useable chunk of rope. Sorry your misc box was a dud.

I've got pre-purchase anxiety over the Tree Stuff bag-o-rope. I could really use a bunch of 12-20' hanks of 3/4" high-strength for making slings, but I'm afraid they'll send me a bunch of little stuff like the 8mm cordage I already have too much of. I just can't pull the trigger. :)

Don't get me wrong. The misc rope wasn't a "dud", I really got my money's worth. But I definitely need to find some way to trade it off.
