Could this be Walnut?

It seems too light, but the guy says he's pretty sure it's walnut - looks like other walnut producers on his property.

The bark looks right but all the black walnut I cut has a much darker center, like just an inch or so from the bark. I have some down at the wood pile waiting to be split and I'll get a pic.

It looks like it could be walnut by the bark, but lighter color would suggest butternut (also known as white walnut) instead of black walnut. It looks like it has been dead for some time. As there are no leaves, I suspect there are not any twigs around either that you can split to check for chambered pith? That would be a good way to identify it as one of the types of walnuts. If this is in a farmyard as it appears, it could be a non-native species.

Can you noodle a piece so we can see some clean side grain?

Elm can be confused for it as well. I'd cut a fresh thin piece off end so you could get a clear view of the true colors not sun faded sitting in yard for years color.

the TOM foundation would be more than happy to determine what species it is.
