Had an issue over the weekend with my 455 Rancher. The chain jumped off the bar as I was finishing up a cut. I did notice that the end of the bar started to smoke so I already know a new bar is in order.

My question is about the chain brake. I reassembled the chain and the chain will not move. The chain brake is flopping around and does nothing. I assume it snapped a spring or something and became fixed in the locked position. What do I need to replace to make the repair? While I am in the process I would like to upgrade to a 20" bar.

Thanks in advance for your help!

If the chain brake is flopping around, then it isn't holding the clutch drum. If it's just the flag that's flopping around, chain brake linkage may be broke.

Most likely some of the drivers on the chain got damaged when you threw the chain.

Thanks. It is the flag floping around. I'll take a look at the linkage this evening and order a new me if that is it.

I'll send manual when I get home. The tension spring is a bi$&h. service manual said to use one of the 3 fork style ac spring removers.

Did the clutch cover come off without prying, and go back on all the way without having to pull it on with the bolts? It sounds like the brake is on but not engaging the handle. may just need to remove clutch cover and reset the brake (which is a *****).
