Homelite XL Automatic

Hi Guys...brand new here with a question. I was lucky enough to find the above captioned saw (photo attached)..it has a new plug, new fuel line and tank filter and I've taken the carb apart and cleaned it. It fires up and runs well at idle, but when throttle is applied it seems to bog a little....if I back off the throttle a bit it runs fine again. Any ideas as to what I should be looking for to troubleshoot this? It was made in Quebec, Canada. The UT # is 50132 and the serial number is T18100189 if someone could tell me a little bit about it.

Try turning the carb screws to the left 1/4 turn and see how it runs then.

Sounds like your low side adjustment is too lean. Like Harley said, try backing the "L" adjustment out 1/4 turn.

Well, hard to tell from his brief description. If it improves, then he should try to adjust it properly, see how many turns out it is set at, etc.. Perhaps he should go through the carb again, new kit, etc..
We'll see if he reports back.

You could try as in post#2 or turn in both H&L mixture screws in until lightly seated & then back out "L" 11/2 turns & "H" 1 turn & go from there

One further question...where can I find a copper oil line that runs behind the exhaust box? I think mine has a crack in it, and I'm wondering if they are generic or manufacture specific?

Yours is a Terry built saw (Canadian) , info is a little harder to come by on those. Still it's basically the same as a U.S built SXL. If I'm reading it correctly, yours was the 189 built on the 081 day of 1981.

Look up "Joyce" (Chain saw lady ) member on this forum her family were Homie dealers back in the day when Homie's were considered good saws she may be able to help also Scott at Chainsawr has an early super Xl Oil line on his parts sale site have no idea if it would be correct

Back in the 80's when I worked for a state highway department those were our go to saws. They were loud, heavy, and vibrated but were dependable as gravity. I run newer model Stihl saws now but still have several old Homies for nostalgia. Enjoy your saw!

Sorry for the delay folks....finally got my saw pulled apart to check on the oiler line....it appears after all that the line is intact. When I run the saw without bar and chain, the automatic oiler is working perfectly....but I wonder if it should be working this well....it pumps about 3 or 4 times a second and is visible.....maybe this amount of oil coming through is what led me to believe this was a leaking line. Is this oiling rate normal for this make and model of saw? It's not a problem, on the contrary the chain is getting lots of oil but its messy. Anyone any thoughts?

Thanks undee70ss....one more question...even though I see lots of oil being pumped into the casing where the drive cog is, when I hold the saw up against a flat surface there seems to be little oil getting on to the chain....no wet mark on the flat surface, and the chain seems dry. Is there something I should be troubleshooting with the oiler?

Drive cog????
Be sure you have the correct bar plates and a correct bar. The oil hole should line up with the plates and oil hole in bar. If they don’t line up, chain won’t get oil.

Sorry undee70ss....should have said drive sprocket....behind the flywheel. The hole in the bar plates line up, and the bar is a homelite bar...the oil comes out in drips....is it supposed to squirt out?? Perhaps its a pumps issue?

It should just kinda roll out. Oil should only be coming out of oil hole only. If coming out anywhere else, either a pump or line issue.
