I`m in the market for a new saw and have been looking at the Ms251 Wood Boss.
I cut probably three or four cords of wood a year and occassionly take down a tree in the 18" to 20"
range.
What can you tell me about this saw, or is there another make or model I should be looking at?

Stihl is still making the ms250. Much better saw in my opinion. One of the first saws I owned and I still run it daily. I've heard bad things about the ms251 with so called improvements

Not bad saw's at all many around here and the ms250
I prefer the the echo 490 in the 50cc i run an 18 inch bar on mine.
and for more power the 590 in 60cc
20 inch bar usually 24 inch bar occasionally.
Both saw's can be had under 400.00
I gave 300.00 shipped for the 490
And 290.00 for the 590 shipped both from ebay.
And i registered the saw's with echo when i got them.
I've had the 590 for over 4 year's
And the 490 for about 2 year's no problems good saw's.
In this price range for a new saw they are hard to beat.20170804_152716.jpg

I bought one when they came out probably at least 3 years ago. Only reason I got it was the dealer was willing to equip it with the picco rim drive kit and matching bar. I view that chain as safer and unless one chooses Stihl only a 6 tooth spur is offered. Stihl also has a 6 tooth spur so one can gear down so to speak. Not sure what wood boss means but there is one version with prime button, easy starter, and easy chain adjust. I chose the base version to get the normal chain adjuster. Kind of like buying a new pick up truck can not really pick and choose have to take a package.

It does need to be set to fast idle to start reliably when warm and one has to squeeze stuff like trigger and operator present to set fast idle. I am pretty sure I have enough use on mine by now to say it should hold up for your purposes.

I know it ain’t what you were looking at but Echo 590 w/ 20” bar. Do a muff mod and retune and you have a beast for your necessities for $400. Echo 490 with same mods, $350. The 490 runs .325 and the 590 runs 3/8.

There is nothing wrong with a MS251. I bought one to see just what Stihl had in the 45cc homeowner range. For what it is, tuned correctly and under $300 here base model, same price as a Echo CS400, I prefer the Stihl. Ran it through it's paces and it handled what I tossed at it and would be fine for a few cords of wood a year. Couldn't find any weak spots in the saw. Mileage is great and the spring suspension and superior air filtration vs. the replaced MS250 makes this an operator friendly saw. And then you have the nice re-sale of the Stihl name if you want to go bigger or a different saw down the road. I have no affiliation with Stihl.

Under $300???

just worked on my dad's 251 what a pita.cut off switch spring and choke rod. i have an older ms 250 and it has cut buu koo cords of wood with the 3/8p chains. on the other hand i have run the echo 590 and it wasn't lacking anything for the price.

590 is a great 59cc for the price but this thread was about the MS251 if I recall.

We use both as ground saws at work and I'm curious as to what makes the 250 better ?
Two things I've noticed between the MS250 and the MS251 are this. The MS251 is cold blooded probably because of being a cleaner, better mileage engine, takes just a bit longer to warm up unless you richen the L screw more than optimum tune. 2) the MS250 is lighter by .8 #s I think.

There is nothing wrong with a MS250, ran them, like them just like the improvements more on a MS251.
