I'm thinking about getting a electric log splitter to run indoors just for working up kindling. It only need to split small strait grained kindling. Anyone use a small electric splitter?
If so what size/brand and how do you like it. Thanks

Yes. It's a 4 ton house-branded Canadian Tire jobbie. Likely from the same far-eastern place as most other 4 ton electrics come from these days. It's great for that kind of stuff - but is also verrrrry slow.

Just my opinion. Consider trying Super Cedar starter pucks. Each puck yields 4 starts for me. I gave up on kindling entirely after finding these.
On the other hand I have a gas splitter and still would like a small quiet electric like you. They look handy. Fill us in if you find one.

I’m pretty intrigued by a couple different electric models. There are some 7-10 ton kinetic splitters out there in the $4-600 range. There’s a Generac branded model available from Home Depot and several offshore models available. I was really close to buying a “timber champ” 7.5 t. They could be had for under $400 but have pretty much disappeared from the market.

This two way Boss model looks like a nice unit with potentially better build quality than the offshore small kinetics.

From what I have seen of the inexpensive screw splitters they do seem to work but are painfully slow.

A friend had a electrie splitter, I don't know the name brand. He carried it to the woods with a small genorator in the bucket of his tractor and split wood. Kept telling me was really nice on some knots but a royal pain on others.

He said he was just waiting for it to die before he bought a hrydrlic gas powered one.
Sadly the electric splitter out lived him. he got sick in the winter spent time in the hospital and died in March.

:D Al

With the volume of wood you go through, I'm assuming when you say indoors, you mean a garage or barn, not you basement? For a commercial kindling splitter I would have kept the old 22 ton and put an electric motor on it.

Hind sight is 20/20. I'm afraid an electric one would be to slow. Whats wrong with the basement? In doors is in doors. But no I
d use it in the shop on those cold days when it's to cold outside.

I just figured you would be in the shop. Most kindling wood we have, pine, poplar, the blade only goes in an inch or so and it pops, so might not be too slow. I think if I went electric I'd get one of the two way splitters.

Yes I've used one effectively for over 10 years now.
I have a 4 ton and got it on sale at Canadian Tire for $200 (half price)
I use it on everything actually. It's split over 20 cords of hardwood as well as many more of soft Pine and other kindling wood.
It's easy and light to move and great for anything up to 18" diameter.
Its pretty surprising what these things will split.
Best $200 dollars I've spent.

I have 3 splitters.. Small 5 ton electric, med gas, large gas..I use the electric for clearing the way to get one of the bigger boys in the hole I want to work.. Absolutely love it.. I did put it on an old Lawnmower shell for height and movability. They tend to be a back breaker if you don't. AND, you can listen to the radio as ya work.

Some years back I built my splitter.24 inch travel.4 inch cylinder with 2 inch rod.
I used a 13.6 gpm two stage pump
My engine died ,so while tinkering around I replaced it with a 5 hp single phase 220 volt electric,3450 rpm

I love it,has about a thirteen second cycle time and has split basically(except for a few tough crotches) everything I have put thru it.
Biggest downfall, I have to use it in my shed where I have electric but that's not really a big problem for me.
No miss,no fuss.flip a switch and go
Somewhere a few years back I posted some pics on the board but I couldn't find them to link to this thread.
