Responses appreciated: What trees are these, and what is boring into them?
Killing a lot of trees on our property.
Anything that can be done to stop this?
Thanks for your time!

Those almost look like injection wounds!

What's the history there?

Some BCMA go batchit crazy?

Google-Learned something: BCMA = Board Certified Master Arborist (?)
These holes made Boring Critters Making Angry!

start around waist height, and are also well above that

Do you know the tree/property's history?

If not I'd yank whatever's in them holes n see if it's a plastic injection site plug?

Somethin mighty peculiar goin on to my eye.

Jomoco

Home site -@100X250'.
Def not injection sites -has to be borers.
Woodpeckers got after some of the trees already cut down, and appears also worked on some of these holes.

What is inside those holes? The vanilla/yellow plug looking maggot type things? Can you try to get one out?

Can't check -not there currently.
Didn't inspect the holes closely -assumed pitch was in them until zoomed the pics to attach. My bad!
They are BB-sized holes, generally perfectly round and where not assume that woodpecker followed.
Doesn't appear to match description of Turpentine Beetle damage.

I'm fond of applying insecticides n fungicides with a trunk drench mixed with PentraBark.

Tree's got enuff holes in it!

What's the water runoff situation?

Any lakes streams or water tables nearby?

Carbaryl's my favorite bug killer, but it's toxic to fish.

Jomoco

Yes -lot is on a lake, and a runoff ditch runs alongside.

Sounds like yur pretty much fugged bro.

Call Guy Mueller, better known as detective dendro to TCIA readers.

He's a member here, and not completely batchit crazy!

If you have the tools, cut around and extract the things. Probably best to bore out a little section of tree, requiring higher skills than every homeowner possesses (but a wood chisel might suffice). Take whatever you encounter--probably an opportunist borer, as the initial cavity might have been made by a sapsucker or similar--to your county extension office. Unless it's something hopelessly exotic, someone there should know what to tell you, or who to refer you to for a better answer.

As to the species, I'm not familiar enough with the Adirondacks to know. The bark makes me think spruce (if it were growing in my part of the world), but the foliage sure doesn't.

Anyone familiar with your woods will know what tree you're looking at

Thanks for your recommendation, old CB -worth a try!
