I'm looking for some black cherry that's been recently cut. I use the inner parts from ground up a 2-3 feet - the rich maroon, meaty inners. I have a stump that I've been trimming pieces but it's starting to get a little funky. Not looking for a freebie... I'm willing to pay. Just looking for some good, fresh black cherry to make some whiskey. It must be black cherry though, I have the cherry that produces fruit and it's not the same.

I'm in Lancaster, PA, by the airport.

Thank you!

Wild black cherry?

Hi Steve, I believe some call it "Wild Black Cherry" too. It's the stuff that is usually found along fence lines. It spreads like crazy, we've had a bunch pop up from the our tree that was cut down. I literally had 5 cords years ago from the school cutting down all the trees on their property but burned it all.

Black Cherry doesn't produce fruit? Or do you mean fruit like you would get in a produce store? Just curious, do you use it for flavoring or coloring
in the fermentation?

I meant edible fruit, like what you'd find in a store - bing cherries. I'd imagine one could eat Black Cherry but they're pretty sour. I put some cherry cubes in with some lower-cost whiskey and let it sit for a half year or so.

if you need fresh cut i can get it most any time at dads farm. BTW we are having a GTG here on the 17th if ya wanna come. just some local firewood hacks. pm me for info.

Seems like the bigger the tree, the darker the wood. The soil conditions have a big affect as well. Interesting application in the whiskey. I know some use it for smoking meat. Sometimes you see it with pronounced dark sap streaks - is that better or is there any threat of cyanide leeching out?

Man, back in March I had the biggest black cherry I've ever seen come down on my property. The middle of the trunk had some of the darkest, meatiest, most resinous looking wood I've ever seen in cherry. Below the cambium it was nearly a white layer. Splits looked like giant slabs of raw bacon, it was wild. It's all split and stacked now, so far from fresh cut.

Do you distill your spirits? I'm a homebrewer, just about any type of beer. Been doing it for about six years now, even have a few silly awards to show for, ha ha. I plan to be at Farmer Steve's GTG.

I'll be in the woods in the North West of PA hunting a bear on the 17th, thanks for the offer though!

I've done some reading up on it and it's not an issue, the cyanide is a product of digestion. Animals should not eat the leaves.

That's illegal... I never break the law. ;)

View attachment 684121 How fresh cut? Like 3 yesterday afternoon.

Is that black cherry? The bark looks different and the color of the wood is less red.

I agree - Looks more like Sour Cherry / Prunus cerasus

I just cut a standing dead mature cherry last weekend - about 24" at base with the most beautiful heartwood I have seen in years. I don't know if you prefer fresh live-cut but I am going to stock up for the smoker and the rest is headed to stacks. Am in Lehigh Valley

I got a cord of wood today that has a bunch of cherry in it, I think I'll give it a try. Looks like a pretty long drive where you guys on here are located. Lehigh valley looks like about 2 1/2-3 hour round trip. If I remember right, Farmer Steve was on the other side of York, Pa... prob close to the same distance.

I really appreciate your offers! I'll see how what I have works and if it doesn't I'll go for a drive.
