I didnt think that numbering system applied to the silver tag saws? If so that would be handy and sensible if they did it the same way.

That's true of very early saws. It really comes down to knowing which saws were produced when with what characteristics. For example silver tag 44's from this same period had 4 digit years stamped on them.
