I have an 036 still that is a tough one to start. It will flood very easily. I’ve checked it over pretty good but today when I had the air filter off and had it running in the shop it was blowing a fair amount of mist of gas back out of the carb on my hand. I pulled my filter off of my 046 and it wasn’t blowing anything out. Where should I go from here?

I've had the same problem. It's most likely a bad carb. I had one with leaky welch plug that did that. The intake side of the piston could be worn and blowing back but if it's all original I'd start with the carb.

If everything else is right your choke might not be closing all the way. Check the selector switch spring.

It’s a relatively new carb so I’m hoping it’s not the problem. The choke looks wide open. I pulled the muffler and it’s not stopped up.

The spark screen clean, export on cylinder not carboned up? Could be worn piston skirt also. Some spit back is normal. Certain models have more.

I just realized how sporadic my post was. The hard start could be problems in the cylinder or carb but the selector spring not closing the choke is common with that model. Low compression could also cause hard start.

I guess more info is needed. What's the compression reading? What is the history of the saw?

I bought it from a former member here. Supposed to be new top end on it. Haven’t checked compression but it still feels stout. It has been a bear to start because if it don’t hit on the first couple pulls it’s flooded. The muffler is clear I just had it off because I was thinking the same thing.

i bought an 036 from a couple moving to florida. when i went to look at it the lady told me they had it to the shop because it always flooded when the husband tried to start it. shop could never find the problem. the saw had old gas in it when i got there but i thought i'll give it a pull or 2. the saw popped on the 2 nd pull and when i flipped the lever up to choke it started on the next pull. the lady's jaw dropped and said her husband would pull and pull and couldn't get it started.
