Hi all.

I have just brought a ms181. It's works perfect but the oiler isn't right. It pump oil through the the grove behind the sprocket cover but it's intermittent. And not enough to get into the bar.
The bar hole is clear of debris. And I've blown compressed air through the hole with no luck.

Any idea whats wrong with it ?
 
Probably just have crud floating around.

Take off the bar/chain, and dump out the oil tank. Fill with a few ounces of gas mix, shake, and dump out.
Repeat. Then put in a few more ounces and start the saw, and run it slow, and watch the crap dribble out a bit, then dump the tank again, and then refill with oil. Start, and watch the oil flow, this usually helps.

I have dumped the oil tank and put in new oil. And blew compressed air through the system but no luck. Do you think this gas option will work ?
 
Yes, or I wouldn't have bothered typing it out.

Think of it as a clot busting blood thinner for a fat guy....

Hi there, I've tried what you said. It's pumping the fuel through fine. Put oil in and still won't pump the oil through continuous
 
Those oilers are a pencil type, and need both correct depth, and orientation where they are pressed in the plastic housing to pump oil.
I have come across 2 now that had the pump move, thus no oil.
move the bottom of the handle over a bit, might need to undo some of the AV rubbers, and take the oil pump supply hose from the tank to the pump off at the base, and check the pump.
there is a plastic diagram marker next to the hole that shows where the recess on the pump should be in relation to the housing its in.
Maybe Harley T can give you the correct depth, cant think of it right now.

Also, the hose can leak at where its pressed into the housing at the base of the oil pump and suck air, giving the symptoms you describe as well.

This is of course after you have made sure the filter is not blocked, they can look ok, but still have stuff stuck in them, a tooth brush can help remove the wood fuz, but you have already blown it out etc

Hey Harley, I took a look (thanks for the manual BTW) and, unless I'm missing something, it seems to say to "bottom" the installation tool when installing the pump. Do you have any idea what that depth would be for us folks who don't have the pump removal/installation tools? I thought I read somwhere, that 7mm below the rim of the hole was the correct depth...but I can't find it now.
 
I never bother removing them normally. Pop off the rear handle and try removing and cleaning out the oil line and filter, and look in the bottom of the oil pump for crud.
I will try to measure it if you have already removed yours.

Hi there all. Really helped having your advice. I've taken the whole oil system to pieces and cleaned. Then noticed a slight wear mark on the worm gear. Put a new one in and now oils a dream. Now I know what exactly to look out for in the future.

Thanks for letting us know what you found, and that its now working correctly again.
Odd that the worm gear would already be worn, but I guess it all depends on what gets ingested in that part of the saw.
