I used a die to pull the brass collar out of the iron elbow. Had to put the elbow in a vice and tap on the vice grip that was clamped onto the square end of the die. It was tight. It goes in snug, and the raised collar will clamp it in when I press the sleeve back into the elbow. You get one chance to do it right. It's the last duckbill the seller had, so claimed on the web site.

I'll squeeze it into place with a small vice. (Don't think I'll need a 20-ton press for this job.) It's not that big a deal, you could almost just tap it in with a little hammer (preferably not a big hammer).

The end of the brass sleeve that has a raised "collar" is the outlet end. The duckbill goes into the non-collared end of the brass sleeve, bill end first, and it's held in the sleeve by an internal ledge in the sleeve. i.e. the ledge catches the rim of the duckbill. The flat "bill" end of the duckbill valve has a tiny hole and points out of the elbow. This results in a one-way "check" valve, letting oil go to the bar, but not back to the source.

I hope I'm not beating this subject to death. Just thought the next person that comes along, clueless like me, could benefit from my experience.

I haven't put things back together yet, but will update when I get a chance. Need to go finish tiling the shower for now.

This picture shows the ledge inside that the rim of the duckbill rest against when inserted bill first.

The junk inside is residue from the original duckbill check valve. Probably was a rubber part that disintegrated.

This photo show the thread left from the tap that I used to extract the sleeve, and the collared end of the sleeve is on the outlet opening of the elbow. In other words, this is the way you line it up and stick it in, the duckbill having been inserted in the left end of the sleeve as shown. I hope that's clear as mud. Anyway, just another fun picture.

Problem solved. Runs well. I want to thank all those who helped me fix the old Lombard Super Lighting and get it back in service. Especially want to thank 67L36Driver for his expertise. The link to the other thread (https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/remington-lombard-auto-oiler-check-valve-fix.200023/) about this problem is accurate and explains everything needed to fix the problem.

I should have searched the evil bay as advised, as you can get a box-full of these duckbills for next to nothing. I ended up paying about six bucks for one, but anyway that's all I needed.

The info at; https://www.arboristsite.com/community/threads/remington-lombard-auto-oiler-check-valve-fix.200023/

shows how to fix the problem.

Thanks for the write up on this. My father just gave me his Lombard super lightning AV that he also bought new back in the 70's and plan on doing a full resto.
