Like Mudd says,
Dry small kindling or scrap splits(softwood is easier to light) on top of newspapers then larger , then larger pieces.
Fire in no time.
I even showed this Boy Scout method to my wife and now she's a fire Queen.
Knowing how to start a fire can also be a matter of life and death, like swimming or making shelter.

When I'm not using "The Force" to will the fire into action I use flint & steel, fire pistol, friction, parabolic lenses, electric arc or nuclear fusion to light my fires.

I use a torch at the house because butane lighters are expensive and dealing with refillable are a PITA. I keep refillable lighters for the wife and her candles. I want a real tool, WHOOOF, there, FIRE, scratch myself and grunt...

I feed my old lady 2 cans of Dollar Store 58 cent beans a day during the heating season. We place her butt near the air intakes. . . One kid takes a long fireplace match and the other kid tickles her stomach. . . It's been working for years.

F.Y.I. No lettuce or melons 8 hours before lighting.

I thought this issue was settled on how to keep the fire burning bright. Since I do not have an Old Lady like wood has the only thing that can be done is to keep a few old tires burning. If you run out of wood you can just shovel some black stuff into the stove so the Old Lady will not be disturbed. Thanks

I use the scrap pieces that comes from splitting wood followed up with a dash of diesel and have an easy hassle free fire. I just light it and forget it.
