-30 two days ago supposed to be 15 tomorrow. Been a very cold winter, hoping the end is near.

First week of March doen't look promising here. they highest temp for the first week here is 32F Saturday drops like a rock Sunday on.

:D Al

Last night an opossum had gotten in the hen house. How did I know that you asked? I have a chicken cam in the hen house. Anyway...I went out there at 2 am in my boxer shorts to dispatch him/her. I haven't had a fire in the stove for 2 weeks. Lows are in the mid 50's and highs are in the mid 70's. :havingarest: Time to light the old bbq.:barbecue: I wonder what bbq opossum taste like?:laughing::laughing:

Hot summers and mild winters, man I love the south.:havingarest:

I have at least 3 opossums that routinely visit my outdoor chicken feeder, along with at least two racoons, three skunks, several rabbits and a smelly fox. How do I know? Chicken cam. No problems with them… so far. I feel kind of bad for the opossums having to eat them dry chicken pellets but they don’t complain. It was 10 above this morning with 4” of fresh snow. About time to start tapping the maple and birch trees again.

I usually don't dispatch opossums if I can grab them by the tail and get a hold of it. There not very bright or see very well, but they can be quick if they feel like somethings after them. I'll stuff'em in an old feed sack and give them a lift down the road.
I had three options, leave it alone, catch it and dump him down the road or dispatch him. I sat there and watched him try getting to the hens but my roost is pretty critter proof but not 100%. He made it difficult so I took the easy way out.

Temps took a dive this morning but still not cold, just very damp and overcast.
The oaks are leaving out so much that I cant see the tree rats very good without a scope.

The duck wars have started again. I have 3 domestic ducks that generally stay in the pond. But now that the whistler ducks are here they are chasing the whistlers all over the yard.

Yup, the opossum is not the brightest bulb in string. One of mine is an old tough looking bugger that is missing half of its tail. He/she is at the feeder just about every other night right around 9pm. Skunks show up around 10pm and the racoons are around 2am. I have never seen the racoons eat the pellets. They seem more interested in playing with the heated water dish. I guess this time of year open water is hard to find.

This week is supposed to be cold all week with single-digit lows, below-zero wind chills, and highs in the teens. In short, the average temp is going to be about 30 degrees below normal and more snow and below zero readings are scheduled for the next weekend.

Nobody around here has seen a ground hog and February snowfall broke the all-time record. I might as well move to Fargo, ND or International Falls, MN.

Pretty much he same over here in the PNW. No winter at all until February and it proceededd to make up for all ghe good weather. 3 weeks of temps 15 or more degrees below normal and snow, snow, snow. Out iwht the snowblower AGAIN today to clear driver and a path (for the 3rd time) from the porch to the woodshed...which is almost empty. Spent an hour today shoveling drifts against the back yard retainer wall that is 5' high. The dog could have walked right over it and he has no brains. Just runs paying no attention to where he's going when he gets out. Feb now ranks 2nd for "most snow ever in February" I was out several times on the willow patch clearance project in Jan, only had one tree to go fro the farmer to be able to move his junk back in there. Not to be until this snow goes away.

Add: no wind thankfully tonight. I checked the temp at about 10:30 to see ZERO!!. That has to be a record for this date. It also seems to have been colder as about 1/2 hour later it was up to 2...and then 3 15 minutes after.

I'll be emptying the wood shed into the porch tomorrow. I have never burned this much wood since I started with wood in 1983.

I'll be splitting a couple more buckets of kindling to try to get several brush piles lit off on Saturday or sunday. All green brush cut in Jan so it is going to take a bunch of kindling and probably 5 gal diesel to start 4 or 5 piles.

I personally don't think any of this is climate change so to speak but the magnetic poles may be shifting causing weird weather

It's weird all right. Here's the description of the latest major storm:

A major, fast-moving winter storm is racing across the country this weekend, bringing forecasts of heavy snow from California to New England and threats of heavy rain and severe thunderstorms along the 2,500-mile path.

The storm was poised to create major travel delays, including some flight cancellations, as it moves swiftly across the country.

In parts of the Midwest, the snow — falling at up to 1 or 2 inches per hour — could pile up fast enough to strand motorists along major highways. Sections of Pennsylvania, New York and northern and western New England could see up to a foot of snow.

Even Nebraska will see all-time low temperature readings on Sunday and Monday -- about 30 degrees below normal.

20's and 30's.

I miss the seasons that's for sure.

Temps took a bit of a dive yesterday, plunging all the way down to 37* at the moment and said to dip below freezing tonight. I had to walk all the way out to the wood shed last night to get wood for a fire. This winter I burned every stick I stocked on the back porch last fall. If we freeze tonight it will not be normal. It never freezes here after valentines day.

I’m thinking the way the weather is going to put about six cords of wood for next winters heating season. I burned two cords this year with scraps.

People forget the weather is dynamic, and cycles back and forth due to many factors. A simple volcano eruption can change the weather for several years. No doubt we do contribute to some of the changes, but I think those changes are extremely minimal.
The entire world has to participate or it wont work.

I think it’s the natural earths cycle. We haven’t had a really bad winter in decades.
My yard is like a sponge just walking on the grass.
