Does anybody know if the 42 carb will work on the 242xp? I got the 242 cylinder on my 42 special and the carb screws won’t fit on the 242 jug. Just curious if I will need to find screws, block, carb, filter holder etc..

That doesn't sound right. AFAIK the carb bolts (50 34 969-03) and inlet block (50 18 620-02) are common to 42, 242, 246, 154 & 254.
Re the carb, IPL "242 - 1.1994" lists HDA 34, 84 & 98 as standard fitting at various times.
 
There was differences between 242 top ends through its era.
Their first top end was made by Mahle and it came with M5 carburetor bolts, that until s/n 242G 8470397, 242 8460046.
After those s/n's all 242 top ends came with M4 bolts.

If it is a M5 top end, you need two bolts, # 503 20 21 05 and one gasket # 501 79 71 02.

I'm curious Tor. Were the original 503 20 21-05 bolts without insulating sleeves and so the thread size went from M5 to M4 when the smaller cross sectioned bolts with sleeves were introduced?

that is correct.

242, back in 87-late 88, it was basicly a modificated 238, had unique crank, top end, muffler, top cover.

Thanks for confirming my idle speculation. :)

In Australia we were still making 444 & 44 in 1988. The market for high-performance small saws was considered too small to justify introducing 238 & 242 so I never got to look inside one of them.
 
Thanks for all the insight!! It appears someone tapped the holes out and I never noticed:( so I’m gonna see if I can find a helix coil for them.
 
I haven’t even tried yet:( i’ve been helping my dad and uncle after work with the pitiful hay crop. Hopefully will get to it later this week, I sure hope I can save it
So I got the helicoils for the cylinder and all I had to do was screw them in! At first bought a meteor piston but heard those didn’t work so I began searching for something else. With the help of an AS member I picked up a NOS OEM piston. I got it all together the other night and couldn’t get any fuel so I bought a tank vent and a filter and put that stuff on tonight. Unfortunately wasn’t able to start it tonight because of fire season and neighbors but I’m excited to try tomorrow! Here’s a pic of the saw57FF8E12-C18F-497B-AB52-24BE7E3EEFC8.jpeg
