Someone emailed me today and asked if I'd be willing to rebuild his 372 x torq. I told him sure I'd help him out and gave him my number. Here's the deal, he called me and said his saw is in the shop because it seized up and he's waiting to see if Husqvarna will pay to rebuild it. If they won't, he wants to ship me the saw and rebuild it for him. I told him I would do it but didn't give him a price yet. I don't normally work on other peoples saws so I have no Idea what to charge. I was thinking $100-$150 for labor, does that sound about right? I don't mind helping the guy out but if there is anyone that rebuilds saws in SE Virgina that would like to do it, I'd be happy to pass your contact info on to him so he doesn't have the added cost of shipping the saw.

I would see if you will need to split the cases first off, that's a bit more time, and tools needed. Also why it seized if known, will carb need a rebuild?

I've only done my own saws, almost every one of them. Each one had almost all OEM parts used, except Meteor, and when Tecomec was 100% Italian. Does he want to pay for OEM quality?

Just my 2 pennies.

I just would like to give him a number for full rebuild not including parts and we can go from there depending on the condition of the saw. He had at a different shop than where the saw is now and they said it passed a pressure test and the piston was scored all the way around. I think he said they wanted around $700 for parts and labor.

If he needs a whole top end, gaskets, bearings, seals he would be looking at around $200 in parts alone. If the saw is complete and needs nothing else I would charge him $200. $400 for a fully rebuilt 372 with new top end sounds fair to me. I'd also push that he sends me another $150 to have it ported. Which is a pretty good discount but since I'm already tearing the saw down I think its fair. If you wanted to pass my information on to him I would greatly appreciate it. Actually if I were to port it also I'd recommend having him let me convert it to a non xtorq. Might as well if a new top end is in order.

I'll let him know but shipping to the west coast might be a deal breaker. Thanks for the labor cost.

He could ship the PHO without the handle or spikes, heck could even leave off the top cover, starter, and clutch cover. Probably end up around $45 with fedex.

Labor cost will depend on how difficult it is for you and how much your time is worth to you. I could rebuild a 372 pretty damn quick, especially if the saw is clean already. Cleaning and prepping takes up a lot of time.

No fun working on a flithy anything. I've got a dealer/friend that will do seals $15, IF I bring the CLEAN saw with clutch/flywheel off.

He has the nice Stihl factory tools.

$100-150 is a little low IF you’re only doing the top end. If you’re splitting the case and doing bearings or crank, it’s very low ($300 minimum).

Watch out for the point where the cost of labor and parts = 3/4 of a new saw. With shipping it is pretty easy to get there. Especially with a dropped or run over saw. Customers get angry when they get charged near a new price.

Wow! I didn't realize normal dealer prices were so high, no wonder he's asking around.

cleaning and prep he big time suck......anything less then 200.00 labor for a complete build and your giving your time away in my opinion....if the saw is clean prob do the top end for less labor but you own the job if it fails so ya need to make sure no air leeks ect.

good luck

You must give him an idea of the cost, you can't be 100% sure for a labor of a saw you didn't even see yet.I am not a dealer,i live far away from you but 300$ labor to tear down a chainsaw? We are talking for a couple hours of work except if you have shops in the center of LA or NY with huge rent.Anyway you know better,i would never give 300$ to someone to tear down my saw,it is almost half paycheck for the majority of employees in Greece.I didn't mean to sound disrespectfull on someones work, just make me huge impression that prices.I earn almost 1500€ per month(i work as electrician),i know people that earn more and if i ask them anything like that for labor for their saw, they are gonna shoot me,kidding.

I agree with you, have rebuilt several 372's. Easy saws to rebuild, split case and replace needed parts, fairly clean saw $100.

I bought a 2017 stihl 661 for $200 from dealer that a church disaster cleanup team dropped a tree on because the dealer wanted $700 to repair! They just sold them a new one.

Surprised they did not take it on trade, repair and sell for $800. Does that dealer have a full time mechanic?
