Arians 27 Ton splitter problems

Okay so we got the splitter from my father last fall. It worked fine. Split almost a cord of wood. And then put a tarp over it for the winter.

Went to use it a few weeks ago, put new gas in, and cleaned the carb and it stalled on startup. Checked the gas tank, had fuel and oil in it. I think. So I drained the oil, and tank and put new in. Bought a new carb and newspark plug. Now it sometimes runs on low RPM, but when moved to high it surges and stalls. It has a new fuel line as well so no blockage there.

Ariens 27 ton paperweight, with the Subaru Sp170 6.0 motor.

This is really slowing down my projects for the summer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
 
Hard to say without being there, but my first suspects if it were mine would be spark plug (easiest to change/fix), then gummed up gas in carb bits. Sometimes it's hard to get that out of all the places it could be - some passages are tiny & hard to get at & clean.

OK, well I reread your post - you have both a new carb & plug? Not sure, now. But you say it surges & stalls. The surging part sounds a little odd - that would usually be a lean condition. Maybe from not enough gas in the bowl. Not sure what to think. But I suppose a new carb could have issues also? Have you taken it back off & checked the bowl for stuff that shouldn't be there?
 
I got my Ariens 27t in August of 2013. Put an hour meter on it during the second (?) season and it's now showing 255 hrs. No problems at all until last week. I got careless and had not changed the engine oil for quite a while, and couldn't get it restarted when hot. Changed oil to Mobil-One. Engine seemed to run rough, and would only smooth out with the choke slightly on.
Drained gas, put a "good amount" of Sea Foam into the tank with fresh premium gas. It took a while of running / splitting ( I couldn't afford to stop working), but it's now back to starting fast and running smooth.
One of the troubleshooting "tips" I read online stated the no start when hot could be a symptom of a bad coil and / or plug.

Like NSMaple1, I'm not sure now if the coil could be failing....
 
If it starts and dies, you know the coil and plug are good but try a new plug anyway. Also if you are sure it's the carb, price new carbs vs, a kit. Sometimes the carb is cheaper then a kit. I've had better luck using fix it fuel over sea foam for cleaning a fuel system. Pull the bowl and see what you find. Good luck!
 
My bad plug problem on my splitter year before last would let it start, but it would die under load.
 
To drain fuel properly of 4T you wanna unscrew the drain bolt on the carb bowl. Imagine what 30ml of old gas would be like sitting for so long in a float bowl.
 
The holes in the pilot jet are extremely small. I had a similar issue on the Subaru engine on my pressure washer. I used a thin piece of wire off a small metal brush and ran it through the main jet. Runs perfect now. There are a few hard to see holes on the side of the jet.
