My first big test for the 461 today bucking up some big white and red oak. Saw performed awesome! This is when you really appreciate a big pro saw.

You can cut small wood with a big saw, but you can't cut big wood with a small saw!View attachment 749426

The perfect saw for that wood. My 461 is still as mean a machine as it was when I bought it 4 years ago.

Yep, I was thinking same thing as I was bucking. Gotta go back in a day or two and get the butts I left behind. The white is about 30" and the red is about 34" or so. I can't imagine trying to cut this kind of stuff with the 391 hambone was briefly considering.

I like the smaller dawgs with shorter bars. They don’t eat up all the length of the bar, and there’s no need with a shorter bar and they kind of get in the way. The saw should cut fast enough and self feed the whole length of the bar where you don’t need them. That said, once I go longer than 25 inches, to a 28 or a 30, I really like the bigger dawgs to lever off.

I’m currently running a 30” but will be picking up a 25” very soon. The 30” got nose heavy after about 2 hours. No, it’s not a light bar, it’s a standard.

I'm running 25". Your right it eats some bar length, but when cutting near bar length wood I don't want to keep stuffing the front of the saw into the log. Plus with 25"+ bar I hate how stock dog doesn't touch when sitting saw down...it rest on nose of bar.

There's a tendency on this site especially to go all-out big & powerful on saws. Yeah, it's cool to pick up some monster piece of power and see it work. But as someone who works with saws day to day, I carry the lightest saw I can for the work I'm doing. No need to hoist and carry some monster saw when cutting medium wood. If you cut big wood only occasionally, you can get by with much less saw than someone who cuts big wood all the time.

From what you're describing, a 72cc saw will serve you well. (My Dolmar 7900, 79 ccs, the biggest saw I own, mainly sits on the floor waiting for the rare occasion when I need it.)
Spoil sport! :)

Congratulations!!! You’ll love the 461. If you’re over 6’ tall you’ll love the longer bar. No need to bend over at all.

I find that useful in bucking branches. Even easier is the grab a smaller saw. In bucking large logs, take a knee as you'll enjoy the rest for the 2 to 4 minutes it takes to completely cut a 24". Give your back a rest, and let the log fully support the weight of the saw.

A 25” b&c are on the way very soon for me. Along with a light weight limbing saw. My 30” gets nose heavy after a few hours. I’ve got a feeling my WB won’t be used much anymore.
