064 won't start when warm

I have a 064 runs great until I shut it off when I crank it back over it'll run for a second then turn off then won't start this saw is old my father has had it a long time hell its older then me lol I did a compression test and it still has 160psi took the muffler off piston looks great so the only I could think of is maybe the coil getting hot since they are known for crappy coils?

There are 13 or so coil flywheel combinations, without knowing your coil we couldn’t speculate if it is the “crappy” coil or not.

Maybe you could try undoing the fuel cap when it’s hot to see if it makes a noise. My 038 Magnum had a blocked tank breather and would run for about half of a tank and stop, the tank created a vacuum which wouldn’t let fuel into the carby. If I undone the cap it would hiss as it sucked air in. The saw would start straight up again for the other half of a tank [emoji2]

If it want start when hot more than likely an electrical issue if compression is good and it ran right to begin with. You are in luck as they do make a good quality AM coil for those as I have use 2 of them already. If the hot no start is an issue to you and you want to try and improve I suggest this.

The early models had some bad coil flywheel combinations. I bet it's your coil. You have to match the coil to the flywheel you have. Some coils have been discontinued.

Coils just don't last for ever. How old is the saw ? Seems to me about 20 years little more or less they become prone to malfunction. Some go twice as long, little more or less. I would figure 20 years for a coil isn't that bad. Coil went bad on my 064 shortly after I bought it about 5 years ago. All I remember is I found some info on this sight and ended up with a flywheel with 2 slots that works with different coils,got the right combination and its been lovely since.

I have only used the proline and they ran right and started right. THe 064s had a 1122-400-1201a flywheel which is the single keyway narrow flywheel. Before I bought the proline just for that combo flywheel I had I tried a some of the coils I had laying around. I got it fired once after it bout took my hand off. You have to match the coil up to the flywheel as the number on the flywheel is on the back. As mention above you can get a 2 slot flywheel, but if yours has the thin recoil on it that flywheel want work as it is thicker. If you could put up some good pics of the flywheel, starter thickness, current coil still on the saw one could maybe tell which coil or make a SWAG guess.

Pretty well got the combos sorted.
Done a lot of bench testing on the 064/066 coils and have a bit of info collected and recorded over the last couple of years.
Don't have a coil problem myself just asking about the proline coils.

That flywheel works on limited and unlimited coil. Although depending on how early the crankcase is it may not have the 4th hole pin boss for the unlimited coil and won't fit .the limited coil isn't made anymore. If it has the 4th coil hole you can use the same coil from a 026 036 044 and replace the coil wire

All 064 flywheel are same thickness. The 066 flywheel is thicker.a 1201 flywheel will take an unlimited coil 000 400 1300 if the case has the 4 holes. On flywheel side. If the case has 3 coil holes it won't work and the unlimited coil that once was on it is discontinued. See the differences in the flywheel side case halves? Notice the 2 screw holes close together that's the later of the case halves
