Going to try to get up a ways and remove a lot of the smaller (6") branchs and maybe mostly from one side on each. then when I fall them I can be pretty much assured that they will fall in an area I wish them too.

Have to be extra carefull Previous owner allowed a hunter in there who left climbing sticks to grow into the trees. I have used my metal dector to find that if I cut them low I can miss any metal in the trees.

Stuff will make some great fire wood, dead long enough most of the brk has fell off most of them.

Yes it does. Need to use a wedge and sledge or powere splitter for best results.

Was hopping to get some pictures at least this week but other work keeps getting in the way.

Maybe today.

My friend and I split an Elm with his hydraulic splitter that fell into my backyard. It was a little more work to split than oak or pecan, but I burned some fires with it last winter and liked it. This will be two years it has been c/s/s and I'm planning to burn it all this winter.

We burn a lot of the standing dead red elm. Some of the favorite in our neck of the woods. Hydraulic splitter definitely comes in handy!

The blade on my TSC splitter stops short of the foot, so when splitting Elm or Hickory, I put a piece 0f 2X6 on the foot so it can cut all the way through.

@rarefish383 This is what I made for my splitter to allow for a complete split without using another piece of wood.

Have you posted those pics before? I knew I'd seen some one do that. I finally got a roll of wire for my MIG and it's on the short list. I just took down a big Hickory for my BIL yesterday.

I believe I have posted these pics before. Can't remember if it was on here or fhc.
If you are wondering about the holes, when I first put it together I had used bolts but they never stayed tight. The edge of the wedge fits in the center when fully extended. By using this, I don't have to keep finding pieces of wood to use.
