Was helping a neighbor out, and he comes back with this saw that he says wouldn't start about 5 years ago so he drained the fuel and it sat on the shelf ever since. Im a husky guy, so this things a little foreign to me. Worth it to fix up? Not sure where to look for the serial number etc. I'm sure this little guy would make a great saw around the wood splitter if it ran, guess I just gotta dive in and see

Find yourself a plastic tank assy and even more worth fixing. I love an 038
so a 028 is sure up there for bullet proof build..

nice saw. Did he give it to you or to get it running for him? Looks in overall good shape. the bar may be almost collectible because of saying west germany on it. Some parts are NLA from stihl for them.

He just gave it to me to have, he knows I tinker with small equipment and have a few cords to cut every year. I’ll be checking compression and giving it a good cleaning before I put any money into it.

Brother in law bought a replacement carb and lines and his fired up after sitting for years. Not a bad saw.
I’m hoping that’s all it needs. I have fuel lines, a carb wouldn’t be bad if that’s all I have into it in the end

One thing to be aware of...from the looks of the handguard, it doesn't have a chain brake. It was an option on this model and the ones with the brake have two torx bolts visible where the handguard meets the saw body on the clutch side.

Edit: It can be retrofitted but will probably require the old chainbrake assembly, which is getting harder to find.

Check the compression and if it’s good. Start on the carb/fuel/fire system. If that doesn’t get it going or it doesn’t run right after some minor tinkering, get it pressure tested at your local dealer or reputable shop. Always check the fuel lines and intake boot, that’s how a lot of them meet their demise.
