I'm looking to grab a new helmet. Have been using my company issued Petzl Vertex non vented but when doing side jobs it's a little confusing for clients as it has the company logo on it.

I'm looking to just get another Vertex, I like the helmet I have already, although open to other suggestions. Other than the obvious insulation value non vented has for electrical hazards (I don't do line clearance); is the vented helmet significantly different in terms of keeping on cool or weight? I have a mop of hair so it gets pretty damn hot up there.

I think it helps just a little - especially if there is some breeze. However, I was at a training by a NATS instructor a few years ago and he said studies didn't show any difference.

I still use vented. I have a vertex vent as my every day helmet. I bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DBBY5TB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for a part time ground helper. I'll wear it when I just need to grab one quick (vertex is in the climbing bag). I certainly don't see $75 difference. I hope to never find out how either behaves in impact testing....but it is ANSI rated.

Wow that looks really similar to the Vertex, I'll definitely give it a serious look.

How's the photo of the guy in the tree with a plug in hedge shear though?

The biggest benefit I can think of for going with a vented helmet, is heat dissipation. Even in the winter, or actually especially in winter, you want to get the heat away from the top of your head and the front of your face. Otherwise you end up with fogging issues on your safety glasses. The more heat you can get to dissipate quickly, the less likely you’re going to have fogging issues with your safety glasses in my opinion.
Your mileage may vary. But I sweat like a pig and give off heat like the sun.

STIHL the BEST

Having used a few brands I highly rate the vertex vent with one exception...a bloody big one IMO and it makes me curse almost daily.

The bastar* clip on the chin strap :mad:

I mean ffs I can be fiddling about for sodding hours trying to get the damn thing to release. The customer can be trying to pay me/arguing about completed job even though it is spec perfect/trying to hand me a bacon butty and I’m just standing there squirming around trying to get the frigging lid off :crazy2::crazy2:

Come on Petzl, sort it out. Even my £50 cycling helmet has a vastly superior clip, as did my old Kask and Stihl arb helmets.

Apart from this making me curse the hat EVERY day (and I’m going to actually implode when I break the clip again trying to get it to operate...and I won’t buy a third petzl because I now know that my first one was not just a faulty one-off) I really like it...

...and the vents make a huge difference btw :drinkingcoffee:

Weird. I’ve never had an issue with the chin strap on my vertex and unbuckling it.

My petzl sequoia harness on the other hand is a different story. Which is not a bad thing in reality.

For myself I have the protos integral the vents open and close as needed. Close them when I want heat kept in open when u want it out. Also handy when working near stinging pests.

I wore vented for years and didn't like it.

Switched to non-vented and much happier.
