upgrading the engine on my old S/S jest wondering how big is to big. i have a Briggs & Stratton 1150 series 250cc. on it now dont know the HP on that put i think its around 7 or 8.

More splitting force = heavier flywheels

If You need more speed, the drive pulley can be sized up. There might be a max rpm for the flywheels so you’ll have to do the math. And the belt will also be too short then so you have to source a longer belt.

IMG_4795.JPG i dont know isint bigger always better the 1150 series is bigger than speck and it works pretty good.

The 3HP briggs on the Super Split I ran as a kid was plenty of engine. I wish I could find one with a blown engine to convert to electric for working in the yard, but that's about #734 on my priority and money list....

I would really love an electric super split. Someday, maybe.

Electric would be nice if i had power at the wood pile. also the issue of stalling on bug wood burning out the motor. inless you put a clutch on the motor
my SS is already modified with a larger push plate, home made table and 1150 series BS power at about 8 or 9 hp. its a beast and can power through tuff wood after the initial hit from the inertial power in the flywheels.
im not much with a calculator but the reduction is something like 16:1 1.5" drive to 18" flywheel

already welded it up and tested seems to work well less rolling and re-splitting

so if anyone was thinking thats to much knife you were right first big white oak crouch snapped the old welds i cut it down from 12" to about 9" and welded it back on

I don't have a super split. But, it does not look too hard to add an electric motor to it, with a quick tensioner on the belt, to swap it back and forth, between power sources. Electric seems way good, for use in garage, or just near home/power. Has anybody done this yet?

yup if your going to split indoors electric would be the way to go.
I load my feed table with the front bucket on my tractor then split into A cage on the 3 point hitch. wish i had a shop big enough to process in.IMG_4799.JPG

Maybe 15 minutes to swap out the gas engine for the electric motor, less if you have an extra base plate. Once it gets stupid cold I'll run mine in the shop with electric. Nice and quiet, in the heat with the game on.

So, uhhh, can I show up with a truckload of rounds and split them inside? Sounds like a nice setup!

The 6.5hp lister diesel I put on my Supersplit makes ~12.5lb/ft at 2200rpm and it works fantastically. Im not running a clutch, just didn't crank down on the belt tension. In the rare occasion the ram stalls, the belts slip and motor lugs down a hare and I just hit the handle. 95% of the time it will just lug down and power its way through a knot or touch spot with the torque.
