Seen this online today. Seller says it's a mac, runs but needs a fuel line. Doesn't know anything else about it.
We'll see if they let me take off the muffler & remove the plug as well.

Yeah, sure looks like it.
Owner just got back to me. She spoke with her BF & said no to removing the muffler. They don't want to chance a bolt breaking off etc etc.
I said OK thanks anyway & said it's just normal to look at the piston & cylinder.
Looks like an 18" bar on it. Big bar for a small CC.

Her BF still said no:
"he said its still a no, he said its a $40 chainsaw, not a $300 chainsaw. he said he never heard of anything like that before, its like going to look at a car for sale.and asking the seller if he can rip the cylinder heads off the car to look inside the engine. he says it sounds ridiculous. sorry"

I replied"
ripping the heads off a car would be ridiculous lol I agree. Pulling a plug to see the condition isn't though. Same with the muffler, it's just a couple bolts, quite normal with small engines, 2 strokes. Not going to be a 200 lb gorilla on them lol, common sense removing fasteners

Good luck with it

Cest la vie. I'm not spending $40 on their word it runs with a broken fuel line in there. Sure we can shoot some fuel in the carb (if they allow the cover to be removed) & see if it pops, but that doesn't tell what the piston & cylinder are like.

Was I out of line? Is removing the muffler or plug really THAT "ridiculous"?

Yup, I was going to do that. Listen for the pop pop pop, but I still want to see the piston, rings etc.
Thanks for the inputs!

Yes. I would not do that. If a person wants the saw then they can buy the saw. That is the end of it. I do not need to see the piston when I buy saws and I buy loooooooots of saws.

I consider the “pull the muffler” idea to be beyond ridiculous.

no. Particularly on easy saws like Stihls with two piece mufflers. But I can see not agreeing to do it in a saw I was selling; I have declined before, generally out of laziness.

Measuring compression only tells part of the story. I’ve bought saws before with good comp but scored piston and rings. So pulling the muffler is best practice, if possible.

That's what I was after. A peek at the side of the piston.
It is only a $40 saw, true. But I don't want to toss out $40 only to have to add a piston & cylinder, seals, rip it all apart...
$40 for a 34 CC saw is fuel line, filters and plug. Not much more $ or effort going into that old saw from me unless it had sentimental value.
Looking at the pic they put up, it looks like at least a 16" bar if not 18" or so. That's a lot of bar for a 34CC saw. Even for the little torque monsters around.
Makes me wonder how hard it's been run, abused. Another reason to see the piston IMHO.
They wouldn't even let me pull the plug. Just the spark plug lol. No need to scratch my head - Exit, Stage Left!

Won't even let you pull the spark plug? What's he trying to hide? Walk away. Buy that really nice xl-76 in portage instead.

Just looked and I don't see a xl-76.
I see 2 Stihl 038 AV Super pro's for $500 but that's not happening anytime soon lol.
